i wanted to see if any one could help with internet options where it is too far for Spectrum to run a line. Home is off 34 and I know that spectrum has service within a mile. I hear horror stories about sat. internet providers. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

Point Broadband will probably serve your area.  Give them a call.  Excellent customer service too.

Just wondering, what are the horror stories about satellite internet providers you mention?

Painfully slow service. Think dial up speeds.

Expensive, even if it was decent speed.

Long term contracts that you will NOT get out of.

Data limits. Not the kind that allow you to do anything other than get email.

There are more I'm sure, but that's enough.

Interesting.  Viasat says they provide 25 MBPS with their Silver service.  I can understand the latency would be long - that is physics and the distance to the satellite.

Yeah, I guess it is expensive, except when it is your only choice (no cable here - I checked with Point Broadband today as the other poster suggested.).

Data limits, probably.  I use Verizon Wireless, and it has low data limits, too.  About 15 GB, when most modern homes not in third world Alabama use about 300 GB / mo.  (FCC figuires).

Long term contracts would not be a concern to me if they truly delivered as they promised.

Thanks for the insight and experience.

thanks for the help. point broadband says the service is full and cannot add any new accounts. I assume they are doing a shared service. I am now in discussion with Spectrum about running a line, but only if the manager agrees to have a site survey done which would require me to pay any additional cost to drop the line from the nearest connection. Assumption is it will be extremely expensive.

I'd sure like the name and phone number of the system technician that promised you the site survey.  None of my calls recently ever got past the gatekeepers who answer the phone there.

The last time I got an answer to this (several years ago), it was $7,000 to run the line, and they could charge anyone else along the way for monthly service without reimbursing me partly for the installation of the feeder.

That did not sound like a good deal to me, so I did not bite.  I don't like TV that much!

Yes, my emails with Point Broadband indicate that it's last leg is delivery is RF (radio), so I would not be surprised if, due to engineering reasons, they limit the number of customers on a broadcast beam (or they should!).

Best of luck with having either cable service or radio put in.

I think we are too far back in the boonies and too hidden by terrain to make an RF-delivered system a wise business investment for Point Broadband.

Thanks for the information. You are correct about the cost that spectrum will limit to run a line at 7 to 8k. If one is willing to pony up the rest you can have it done. Ironically if one person within the distance allowed gets service you can daisy chain until you are in the allowed amount. I am told it will take up to 2 wks for manager approval if denied the cost is totally on me. I also have a company that does their underground work is looking at cost estimates this week.
