Really exciting news in today's Outlook! The city of AC is going to ask to annex the Wicker Point area via a request from the landowner, Russell Lands. In my opinion, this is really, really exciting news for the lake, for AC, and for RL.

The paper says there will be more details in Wednesday's edition.

Here's the text of the pertinent part of the article:

"Alexander City City Council voted 6-0 Monday night to ask the Alabama Legislature to annex the deep water point on Lake Martin. Officials were tight-lipped Monday night about what could be coming to the Russell Lands property, but everyone was excited. “Thank you to everyone at Russell Lands for bringing this to us,” councilmember Eric Brown said. “It is exciting.” Council president Tim Funderburk said, “It is wonderful news. I can’t wait for it to happen.” The vote came after a 43-minute executive session with Russell Lands executives including David Sturdivant, Tom Lamberth, Steve Arnberg and Roger Holliday to discuss an economic opportunity. The council passed a resolution asking for annexation of 1,500 acres of property including Wicker Point. Russell Lands currently has more than two dozen cabins constructed in the 1950s and 1960s on Wicker Point it leases out. Many of the cabins have been rented by the same family for generations. The proposed annexation has to be advertised for four weeks before it can be taken to the legislature and presented to lawmakers in Montgomery. The Alabama legislature will meet for its first day of regular session Feb. 4. Island annexation is nothing new to the council. It asked the legislature to annex Miner’s Cove on Sturdivant Creek in March. At buildout Miner’s Cove could see 80 new waterfront homes."

I believe this may be related to the new aforementioned resort development.  Since we live on Paces Point right across from Wickers point I can't say I am thrilled about development possibilities.

Wonder where the connecting bridge is planned. Old Pleasure Point is ripe for development.
Don't like it!

here's the update in today's issue:

***** 12.5 miles of Lake Martin shoreline to be in new development  - Officials with Russell Lands on Lake Martin are planning for the future with a new development. The project will include about 1,500 acres, 12.5 miles of shoreline on Lake Martin and about 450 lots, according to Steve Forehand, vice president and general counsel for Russell Lands on Lake Martin. The company has been developing neighborhoods around Lake Martin for decades with developments including Willow Point, The Ridge, Willow Glynn, Trillium, Windermere, Raintree and River Oaks. It is planning its next steps to grow. “We have known for sometime as The Ridge reached buildout we would be looking at another large scale development,” Forehand said. “Wicker Point is it. It won’t be near the same size as The Ridge.” He said The Ridge has a total of about 800 lots and still has interior lots to build on. The Wicker Point area is largely undeveloped but has a few cabins Russell Lands has leased for decades. Utilities and roads will need to be built to accommodate the development. “It is in an area without any real infrastructure,” Forehand said. “It requires a lot of planning and we are in that process. There is still a lot of planning to do. It is not a quick and easy process.” Plans for amenities for the project are still in the development stages. “We haven’t zeroed in on what amenities or the scope of those amenities yet,” Forehand said. Monday night Russell Lands executives requested the Alexander City City Council to ask the state legislature to island annex 1,500 acres of property including Wicker Point in an effort to secure police and fire protection. “Since it is in Tallapoosa County and there is a need of city services, it was a necessary request,” Forehand said. “The cost of the city providing the services will be offset by the collection of additional property taxes and more. It is a win-win for everybody.” Forehand said Russell Lands will continue its efforts to make the development a reality. “We will continue the planning, but we are a long way from moving dirt,” Forehand said. “We think it will be something the city will be proud of.” ********

Does this imply no upscale resort destination development?

I still think that is in the plan - don't know if it will be Wicker Point or some other Russell Lands property.

Before the proposed annexation can be brought to the legislature and shown to politicians in Montgomery, it must be publicized for four weeks. On February 4, the Alabama legislature will convene for the opening day of the regular session.
