closed permanently today.  I don't think they had much business - having taken all the personality out of the place when young Tony sold out.  I really hope they open another coffee place though.

Eclectic has a really nice coffee house-amazing one can survive in Eclectic but not Alex City !

Froshens Department store will be closing as a retail outlet in the Spring and he is turning into a special event venue.  And another women's clothing retailer has closed too (not Cloud 9)  The "made in Alabama" store closed last week.  The guy that owns Coffee Corner says he is going to open another business in that spot.

They better hurry up with developing the tourism on the lake that is going to be the savior of Alex City.  Because that's where they are putting all their eggs.

Wouldn't be surprised if Alex City petitions Legislature to ANNEX ALL of Lake Martin !

Equality, Eclectic, Tallassee, etc might have something to say about that!  Good thought though.

I think Russell Lands would object to that.  I think that this new development that will be developed by Russell Lands, but part of the tax base for Alex City, is them throwing Alex City a bone.  It's an interestingly cozy relationship.

Such nonsense.  They think highly of their town that is struggling in a hot economy!  Maybe there are reasons that they need to be working within the city limits they currently have?

I was surprised to see Alex City listed as 9th poorest city of it’s size in Alabama.  The AC Chamber of Commerce seems totally oriented toward the three street downtown strip.  Seems there continues to be resistance of the old AC folks to admit that Lake Martin exists.

Russell probably wants AC taxpayers money to pave all the roads for the new development, as well as provide free fire and police protection.  Ain’t nothing done without profit in mind!

AND  a new proposal to increase mayors salary to $80k--says that is comparable to Decatur--WELL I can tell you i was in Decatur recently  & there were hotels//real nice restaurants everywhere; Decatur pop 55,000+; Alex City 15,000+; hard to rationalize that as comparable

Decatur is a suburb of Huntsville and has nothing in common with Alex City.

The whole of Alex City leadership is counting on developing tourism on Lake Martin.  It's really their only plan.  The rumors are circulating again that there is going to be "something big" coming that is going to save Alex City.  My uneducated guess is that this is a resort of some kind that Russell will build on LM, because otherwise, other than Wind Creek there isn't any attraction for tourism on Lake Martin.

They continue to fight the demographics of Alex City.  Aging population, low median income, no skilled workforce.  I've heard that they want to expand the curriculum for CACC.  But all this stuff is going to take years, not months to come to fruitition.   The new HS they hope will attract people here too.

I understand the $80K salary for the mayor has been shelved for the time being.  There was also a discussion to do away with the mayor, et al, and hire a city manager.  That makes sense to me, because instead of the popularity contest that seems to be the election process, it would mean that perhaps they could set specific skills and hire someone that knows what they are doing.  But I think that is too much change for Alex City.  I think there are a lot of people still hoping that some big manufacturing company will show up with $40 and $50 an hour jobs.

Same issue as the clothing store.  Same owner.  Skipped town.
