I am a lake weekender in Coosa County and have 2 working Heat Pumps installed in 1997. They work great buit have old version of coolent I think r22. I may want to upgread during off season to prevent a breakdown during the busy season even though they are working now. Has anybody upgraded their systems at a reasonable price and be happy.

1997......21 years old...time to replace with new ones. You got you money's worth.

Get one with the lifetime warranty if you will continue to own the propery. I think Trane offers it.

The new ones will not last as long as your old ones.

Man isn't that the truth.  I put in a new Trane heat pump about 4 years ago and had to have the coil replaced already. Cost me $275 in labor and $500 for the recharge.  The coil was covered under warranty.

Am I understanding your post correctly? Was the entire cost of your repair covered under warranty?

So the lifetime warranty cost you $775 in repair even with "lifetime warranty" ??

Actually I paid $275 for the initial visit but had to pay to recharge it since the coil allowed the refrigerant to leak out.  So the labor for the install and the new coil were free.  But I did have to pay for the initial diagnosis.

The $275 for a service call seems a little on the "pricey" side. Since the defective coil caused the refrigerant to leak out it seems that should also be covered by Trane.

My experience has been initial call is subtracted from the actual job.

Just to clarify.  We had a leak in a refrigerant line in our wall that was repaired in place.  I sent the techs looking there first which is why it took extra time.  Interesting question on the refrigerant.  I went and looked and the trane warranty only covers labor and parts.  It doesn't exclude refrigerant but also doesn't explicitely cover it.

Thanks for the clarification. All things considering, it looks like under the circumstances the repair was reasonable.

My understanding Trane has 5 year Limited warranty and if you register the unit within 60 days they double the warrqnty. It covers Parts only. Owner is responsible for shipping charges for the part, diagnostic charge, labor, and refrigerant. Spelled out in their warranty.

Most a/c repair companies are ripping off homeowners on Freon.  The old R-22 is no longer in production so it is expensive thru black market, etc.  New Freon is very reasonably priced, even online by the container.  Problem is, repair companies started charging the same price for the new Freon as the old hard to find r-22.....about $80/lb......a huge rip off.  It is so wide spread that manufacturers have stopped covering Freon....they refuse to be ripped off.

 A 20# bottle of 410 is about $150.

That is correct as far as my warranty goes.  Sadly, I did some recent research on Trane and apparently they changed suppliers for the coil metal that has proved to be a disaster for them and their customers.  Penny wise and pound foolish.  Some brain surgeon at corporate probably got a big bonus for saving them so much money on the coil metal.  Hope he has since retired.

The main reason I want to upgrade my (2) r22 heat pumps are if something happened and one needed a full charge of freon I don't want to be paying the high prices r22 is going for..I surely don't want to deal with a havc company that is going to rip me off on the new stuff at r22 prices. I always have belived in paying a fair price for equipment  and paying a fair price for on going services. Sometimes it is hard to find a company the will do both as it seems that because it is a lake house some think they should charge more.I plan to replace both units before spring.

Try Adcanced Heating and Air.  Think they're out of Alex City.
