I have a few questions about boating on Lake Martin.  We will be coming over in June for a nice weekend getaway and I would like to know a few things before coming.  Any hope would be appreciated.  First, do I have to have an Alabama boating license to operate a pontoon boat? I have a Mississippi boating license.  Secondly, if bringing a boat with us, do I have to have it inspected before putting it in the water?  I know in Wyoming if you brought a boat in from out of state you had to have it inspected for invasive species before putting it in.

You are good to go.  Just try to wash the boat before coming due to the invasive species but there is no inspection.

I suggest you look at the Alabama boating regs to make sure you have all the required gear on board.  I suspect its the same as Mississippi but you never know.  You are going to love Lake Martin.  Big, wonderful water, lots of undeveloped shorelines and some very big stripers if you like to fish.  What part of the lake are you going to be on?

One thing alabama does require is that most don't is a trash receptacle on board.  It can be as simple as a trash bag large enough to hold your trash, so if you have a large cooler full of beer and only an old empty dollar general bag it may not cut it.  It's  a gentle way to make folks aware the trash they produce and to take it back home with you.  Lake Martin is one of the most beautiful and pristine lakes in the country.  You are in for a real treat.

Hah!  I did try it once on Lake Martin but no luck.  I do like to fly fish though.  I'll send you a picture so you can envy my skill.

If you plan to fish: All non-residents 16 years of age and older must have a license to fish in the state of Alabama.
