It is real shame that Trump only thinks of Trump and put this great American in such an awkward position. I am surprised that he doesn't take retirement and say adios to Trump. He has 39 years of service and has the misfortune of serving under Trump. All military current and retired should support him. After 39 years of service to this country, he had to stand in front of St John's church and be part of watching a fool hold a bible upside down. How pathetic this county has become under the leadership of Trump.

WASHINGTON — The country’s top military official apologized on Thursday for taking part in President Trump’s walk across Lafayette Square for a photo op after the authorities used tear gas and rubber bullets to clear the area of peaceful protesters.

“I should not have been there,” Gen. Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in a prerecorded video commencement address to National Defense University. “My presence in that moment and in that environment created a perception of the military involved in domestic politics.”

He had the option of saying he had another appointment.  One of the basic premises of our military is that they are apolitical.  Esper said he thought that they were going out to inspect the damage and to greet the troops.  Obviously Trump had something else in mind.

Both Milley and Esper are grown men.  They could have excused themselves and gone back to the Pentagon pleading urgent appointments.  I'm not saying that they were caught in an ackward situation, but they could have handled it better.

I don't think it is that easy to say "Hey Donald, I am too busy for your silly games".

Did you notice that Ivanka carried the bible in a $1,500 handbag?  Where is Ben Carson these days??? Hiding in the bunker??? There were all white guys hanging with Trump and his upside down bible.

Hound, too bad he is unable to project an image that he feels the pain for those dying from 19 or for Floyd. He is incapable of giving an Oval Office speech to at least try and help heal the country. Over half the country would not believe his sincerity.

Phil described him best..."Trump pretty much is about as low life of a human as possible that is what it is, and I think most republicans do recognise".

Trump conned Milley and Espey into going to the photo op......

The two had been summoned to the Oval Office in the preceding hours to update the President on efforts to use the military to tamp down on violence, and the official suggested neither man planned to join Trump as he walked across Lafayette Square to the church.

"As that meeting concluded, the President indicated an interest in viewing the troops that were outside, and the secretary and the chairman went with him to do so. That was the extent of what was taking place," the official said.

If you think all of this civil unrest is unplanned, history will tell the truth.  The swamp is deep and if they don't like the new President, one merely resign but to hold new conferences only illustrates the swamp in all of it glory.

defund the cops!  Great idea.  Load up at home, it's going to be wild!  Have a great evening y'all.

The rest of the story is that Milley was summoned to the WH while he was on his way to FBI.  He thought he would be at the FBI for a while, so he had his cammies on.  But he got called to the WH for a very tense meeting with Trump, in which at one point Milley shook his fist. He and Esper did not want to declare insurrection and use active duty troops, because it would send the wrong message.  Milley was still hoping to get to the FBI (It practically unheard of for a military member to show up in his battle dress uniform for a meeting with the President), and he and Esper thought that they were going out to inspect the damage and greet the National Guard.  Milley said he was hanging back, trying not to be part of the picture.

He actually considered resigning once he saw the media and social media reaction and spoke for hours to a few of his mentors.  After what he said today, it wouldn't surprise me if in short order Trump desides to relieve him and he retire.  The business about an apolitcal military is taken very seriously and is something we teach foreigners in our military classrooms.   I suspect he and Esper wil not be around long, knowing that Trump does not tolerate disagreement.

Obviously, I wasn't there, but I still wonder if Milley couldn't have pleaded another appointment, if he knew what was going to happen.

The closer to the election, the less Trump should be firing military staff. His turnover rate is terrible.
