For all you self righteous Karens out there I refer you to this article in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine from May.  Relevant excerpt below.  And to be clear I will repeat myself, if you feel better wearing a mask please by all means do so.  Just maintain all the other measures and you'll be fine.  But for you Karens that want to vilify those that follow the science please STFU....

On Facebook.  They the public has bought into the panic and if you try to educate people on masks, and they freak out!  Keep preaching MM.

Show them this study from NEJM and watch their head explode.  Will drive the Karen's crazy because they often use the fallacy of appeal to authority and when an authority is at odds with their worldview they go to pieces.  Interestingly, this was Fauci's views as recently as a couple of months ago.  He knows the truth but he is not going to state the obvious.  Interestingly, both he and Birx pretty much admitted that the new ChiCom virus spike was a result of the protests.  The spike is almost entirely with people under the age of 35, which in my view is very good news.  It means those at risk are being careful as they should and those that can get the virus and move on with their lives can do so with very little impact on the death rate, hospitalizations, ICU beds and so on.  And it will drive us toward a better understanding of the actual mortality rate, which by the time this is all said and done will be comparable to the common flu, albeit better for the young and worse for the elderly and those with co-morbidities.

I don't think anyone thinks a mask will protect you if not used in conjunction with the social distancing, and handwashing and staying out of huge crowds of people.  As long as the CDC recomends wearing a mask, I will continue to do it.   I don't go around harassing other people about it.  But the numbers continue to spike and no matter how much anyone tries to twist it as "better", it's not.

I don't suppose you noticed that the article is about HEALTH CARE WORKERS, who are dealing with the sickest.  Says nothing about the rest of us.

Actually the first part of the article was about the widespread use of masks in the general public and they then pivoted to health care workers to make a similar point.

I actually think based on what I've read and heard is that tons of people think the masks will indeed protect you.  That's been my concern from the get go....the false sense of security.  Here's the reality, more people are wearing masks today than ever before and yet we are seeing a spike.  Why is that?  I believe it is primarily because people think they can go out and protest in large crowds as long as they are wearing a mask.

I have no idea who is right on whether wearing a a mask protects others, protects me, or protects both, but I do know a lot of scientific and medical people who are a lot smarter vis a vis COVID 19 than anybody on this forum (MM excepted of course) say it is a good idea, so why not wear if for no other reason than in an abundance of caution?  It may or may not help but it for dang sure doesn’t hurt.   We all know the answer.  The bottom line is that anybody who refuses to even consider wearing a mask is making a political statement regardless of whether that action might possibly be putting others and/or themselves in danger.  If it was only yourself that you might be putting at risk in order to show your solidarity with Trump that is fine, but what if you are putting other Trump fans in danger?

I don't really know the answer to that.  Most of the protesters I see have masks on.  They aren't social distancing.  Maybe we have another big spike coming.  Or maybe it just hasn't been reported.

The simplest explanation is usually the correct one.  I agree that most of the protesters were wearing masks and my observation is that young people are more compliant in this regard.  As the doctors stated in the NEJM article, masks provide little protection.

All the time.  People who read the research literature that masks have little protection against the virus, either wearer or receiver.  In my case anyway is not political as is the rest of life's decisions.  But he are correct that some people are defined by the political likes and dislikes and in your case hatred (TDS).

I personally do not care what this president does or doesn't do, nor do I care what name shirt he wears.  I prefer to keep my distance at all times even when I go to buy groceries at Walmart every Wednesday.  I also take my own Clorox wipes and constantly use them while I'm there.  But when I go to a place that requires a mask, like Sams, I comply.  But I avoid those areas that require mask at all times like Birmingham and Montgomery.  Unfortunately I wear a mask to appointments at UAB, their rules and i comply.

What I find amazing is the claim by that other party that they follow science, when it clearly shows that masks are not effective except those for hospital use N95 type.  So be sure to get your absentee ballot and I'll go vote at the poll, without a mask.

For me, it has nothing to do with politics; I just prefer not to wear one if I am not required to do so.  I find wearing a mask to be very confining and uncomfortable and I am constantly trying to adjust it with my hands, which may be doing more harm than the small benefit it otherwise provides. I really believe that a mask provides more safety to non-wearers than it does to those wearing one, albeit a small benefit IMO.  As an alternative, I try to avoid large gatherings and keep my distance when I am out, as best as I can.  Whether that is good enough, only time will tell, but it has worked so far as I have survived a cruise in March and a Florida beach vacation a few weeks ago.

Masks do just that......Mask (cover) your face so when they raid Target’s the cops can’t ID.  It ain’t about COVID, it’s ID.

Just the mask doesn't do it - you have to do the other stuff too.  Social distance, wash your hands, etc.

Mike Pence and Alex Azar* in the last couple of days are literally begging people to wear masks!  Why...because they see what is happening all across the country and are politically savvy enough to see that they will soon be out of a job unless it can be turned around PDQ and they believe the advice of the health community rather than the rightwing noise machine that has brainwashed you and MM!

* Not to mention some of Trump's favorite Guvs in GA, FL, TX and AZ

PS:  The City of Jacksonville made masks manditory today and the sheriff of Duval County said he will be issuing citations to any folks at the GOP Convention that fails to follow the requirement!

PSS:  The City of Charlotte is giving thanks and breathing more easily!

All you have to do Archie is comply.  Wear a darn mask if asked to do so. No big deal.  Also, if being arrested by one of our fine police officers, comply,  don't resist and likely the process will function as it is supposed to do.  And if you are told to not burn down a Wendy's because it eliminates jobs not to mention, it is a felony, just comply.  And if advised to not take over 6 city blocks, overtake a police station and claim it as your own, comply.  And if advised that congregating in large groups without masks and social distancing in the name of peaceful protesting is dangerous because it puts us in the healthcare arena at greater risk, them comply.  And if told that throwing bottles at police officers is not in the best interest of society at large, then comply.  If protesters see a no trespassing sign, then comply, and don't break down a fence and then cry wolf when faced with armed homeowners who fear for their lives.

It would be nice if we all could comply Archie,

even when I think the law is unfair or unneeded.  Will you do the same and urge all on this forum to do the same if and when wearing a mask in public becomes a requirement in wharever area is applicable?   Now if we could only get the president of the United States to ''comply''!

Indeed, with regard to COVID, comply with whatever mask wearing requirements are recommended.  The difficult part is not in convincing members of this forum, but individuals under the age of 30.
