So I live in a slough and go no wake until the lake opens up.  Went out on Saturday per usual and as I was getting set up to wakeboard with one of the kids some late teenage kid pulls up on his jet ski and starts to give me a hard time about the waves my boat made when I left the slough.  As it turns out this was a family with a bunch of teenage kids with 12 old jet skis that come into our slough and drive around like crazy almost every weekend.  They also trespass on a nighbors undeveloped property all the time to put the jets ski's in and pull them out.

I politely informed Kevin that the area where I speed up is nowhere near their dock and is over 100 feet wide.  I also pointed out that he had a lot of nerve complaining about waves considering the crazy stuff they do in our slough with their obnoxiously loud jet ski's.....somthing I would point out that I've never complained about other than the running joke about the rednecks are back with their jet skis.  He claimed their waves were only 6 inches high but he threatened to come back and make some real waves.  I told him to have at it as I didn't care since I moor my boats to withstand waves but he will have to deal with my neighbors who might not be so nice.  I told my next door neighbor about it and he told me this family is infamous for being entitled and whining about people all the time because they have the nerve to use their lake.  He said if they do come into our slough and make waves he'll take his 27' boat up and do circles near their dock.  And he is my calm neighbor.....the others would not be so nice.

My wife wasn't initially happy with my response but when we went back in and I showed her where their dock was compared to where we started going faster she understood why I responded the way I did.  I go out of my way to avoid making waves around docks and in narrow areas.  In fact, I only wakeboard or surf in areas with no houses or docks out of courtesy to others.  I like to remind people that when you live on a lake you need to plan for waves even if they shouldn't happen.  I go there to relax and don't want to spend my time getting angry about waves.

I think by their very nature, wake boats do make more waves, even when they aren't trying to.  But, it souds like you know what you are doing and are trying to minimize the impact.  I think sometimes that jet skiers think they are exempt from common boating etiquette and responsibility.

No doubt they do as they are designed to make big waves.  But at idle speed (~1,000 rpm) it makes no bigger wake than a pontoon boat at idle speed.  However, at 2,000 rpm there is a huge difference.  Really bugged me about the way he approached me about this......not just the message but also the hypocritical messenger.  If one of my kids did what this punk did I would not be very happy and they'd hear it from me.......not sure what this kid's parents teach them but from what I heard from my neighbor that bad fruit didn't fall far from the tree.  I should have asked him where his mask was as he got too close to my boat.

The only time I've ever been approached by someone about my kids was a skier using the slalom course.  He tracked them down at our house to tell me how much he appreciated that they left the area of the slalom course when he came to use it so it would be smooth.  He told me he's never seen that before.  I try to instill virtue in them but I also tell them to never back down when confronted by that kind if stupidity.

Well, especially since the Karens and Kevis are coming at people confronting them without knowing their intent.  It's just the way we live now.  On FB, there are all kinds of videos about people confronting other people for all sorts of things, including not taking their cart to the cart corral at stores.  If everyone would just mind their own business unless they see something blatant enough to stand up to, everyone would be a lot happier.  It's crazy what people complain about.  I'm surprised they didn't video you and put it on social media.  That seems to be the thing now.

your 100% right on about the red neck wave riders and their crazy ass.  trying to do something about it with my neighbors also.  have had several confrontations myself however martini you did pull the trigger on your wake boat sat. a little too early. your wake bounced my ski off the ramp.  no big deal and no damage but hold back a little longer please.

Where is your house on the slough because where I start going faster there is only one dock that is very far away and the other house has none?  I accelerate as quickly as possible to get on plane and normally don't make waves anywhere near docks.  If I did all I can say is ugh because I recall starting where I usually do and that shouldn't impact anyone.  Either way I was nowhere near their dock and I do feel sorry for them if they come down to the end of the slough and start to make a bunch of waves.  It will not end well for them.

Glad I'm not anywhere near where those kids are with their jet skis.  Bad enough when they come and act crazy at the end of the slough. but again I have never complained as that is lake life.  By the way, wave me down next time so I can come by and say hello.  I promise to come at you slowly.

mm its no big deal, you usually come in and out slow and have always done so. l figured you were trying to catch up with the pontoon boat that left out fast from down at your end. thought maybe  you knew them . like l said its no biggy.  now the idiots across from me is another story. no peace and quiet with those stand up skis running. they are pals with your neighbor david. in fact l believe they get parts and maybe machines from him.  the lot they put in at have been friends of theirs for years so they probably got permission  to use it. have also talked with the MP about issues. someones going to get hurt sooner or later.  about 10 years ago the nut 2 doors down from the rednecks had his daughter and friends up from auburn. playing chicken on skies, they hit head on. dove in to help get 1 girl. your neighbor jim and carla davis picked up the other.  have seen some crazy stuff in 38 years of living here.  l do wave at you but you guys ignore me and drive by. again no problems with you just the snarky ass folks across from me. dont try talking to the mother, you will get yelled at, besides she is usually out in the chairs watching them show their ass.

Which side are you on, ours or the other side?  I usually wave back to folks but maybe never saw you.    I do feel sorry for you being that close to them.  Like I said, I've never complained about them coming up into the slough and driving around like nuts in their noisy jet skis as life is too short.  Not everyone has that attitude unfortunately.  I do remember your old neighbor and was a victim of his wrath on one occasion.  The MP came down once based on his complaint and I told them I go through there at 1,000 rpm and if that was a problem he needed to fix his docks.  As I understood from Jim or David, he passed away from a heart attack but am not sure.

Either way, it was the message and messenger that got me irritated and I'm usually very careful about waves.

MM< did you trade the CC for the wave boat? How long have you had the wave boat?

Nope.  I've had the Malibu for quite a while.  Bought it when the kids were younger and wanted to learn to wakesurf.  The CC was just not sexy enough for them.  Sadly it is getting less and less use since they all live out of state.  We do have some adult friends that like to wakeboard so we use it with them as well.

We also have a Wake/Surf Boat -- and like you --we do try our best to avoid anything over no wake in residential sloughs and near docks.

We have been the victims of rough wakes from all kinds of boats as our house is on the edge of a slough where everyone --living further back in the slough-- starts motoring faster as the lake opens up a little. It's just part of the “lake living” life I guess -- but it can be aggravating. As you point out, going a minimum speed is really worse than getting up on a plane when it comes to the physics of making waves.

My pet peeve are those who don't seem to really know what NO WAKE means --   at places like Chucks and The Landing when you are trying to park an inboard with some idiot motoring in thinking he is NO WAKE -- when clearly, he is not -- is beyond comprehension. We are from Florida where there are many no wake zones on the St Johns --and some areas of river fed lakes --due to Manatees. You will find out real quick what no wake means when you get a 1K ticket for speeding through those zones. No wake means what it says - absolutely no wake.  Or folks who use their parking lights for navigating the lake at night and blinding everyone around them.  But I digress.

Sigh.

I gently told Kevin that the area where I accelerate is more than 100 feet wide and is not even close to their dock.  I also mentioned that, given the insane things the waves do in our slough with their loud, obnoxious jet skis, he had a lot of nerve to complain about them.
