Knocked one off the bucket list this weekend.  Four of us rented kayaks and made the run from Horseshoe Bend to Jay Bird on Saturday.  Since there hasn't been much rain the past week or so, there is minimal release from upstream, so the flow was down quite a bit from just a few weeks ago.  Anyway, hit the water around 9 at HB.  A good bit of paddeling, several hang ups and a few neat rapids.  Saw two eagles and other assorted wildlife.  One member of our group brought a pole and caught three fish on the way down.  Got to JB around 12:30 so approx 3 1/2 hours for the trip.  Could have made it faster but we stopped a few times.  Anyway, great fun and we will certainly do it again in the future.

Thanks for the info.  I still hope to make that trip this season, but that could be all the way through September if we are lucky.  Sounds like a great day.  I hope my nest trip will be to put in at Kylmuga Mill in Childersburg and float down to Hollywood, but that is sentimental to me since I grew up there.  In fact on the road between the two locations you go right past my childhood home.

What the Childersburg Historical Society has done with the old mill and covered bridge is really inspiring.  They have a greeat little full hookkup all the way to way primitive camping with lots of trails along the creek and back into the old AOW property.

I would love to know the put-in and takeout locations for this trip. Our lake place is in Jacksons Gap, but I'm not familiar with the roads over that way. Sounds like a great trip.

For this particualr run you put in at the Hwy 49N bridge at Horsehoe Bend and take out at Jaybird Landing.  You can map both locations.  There are a coupel of companies that rent kayaks and provide transport or use the two vehicle method.  It is not a long drive between the two spots.  Maybe 10 miniutes each way.

Jay Bird is off of Rock Springs Rd.  Rock Springs is off of Main St in Jacksons Gap.  Same road you would take to get to Camp ASCCA.  As Lifer mentioned, Horseshoe Bend is just off Hwy 49 near the military park.  I live in the AC portion of Jacksons Gap and it took us around 30 minutes to drive to JB.  Be aware that the road to JB starts off paved then turns dirt.  Trucks and SUVs are ok but I wouldn't take a low clearance car there.

We used Off the Beaten Path out of Dadeville.  They met us at JB, took us to HB and equipped us with the yak, paddle & vest.  They offer several trip options so check out their web site if interested.  Good experience with all and hope to do it again soon.

I have done it. It's a good run, a lot of fun, and if you catch it just right, when the water is running high, it's outstanding.
