Subject:   Vaccine distribution mistake in the U.S.
Date:   3/10/2021 12:00:56 PM

Saw an interesting article comparing the approach in the UK versus the US and if correct, we made a mistake.  First, the current two vaccines are 90% effective after one dose and ~97% after the second dose.  So far in the US around 20M have gotten their second dose.  Second, in the UK they were advised to only give a single dose to all comers and then a second dose afterward.  Their infection rates are way down compared to the US because many more have gotten a first dose.

No recriminations about this but in hindsight we would have been far better off had we followed the UK strategy.  Lesson learned.

I have asked the question a few times on fB but little response.  Why not get twice as many folks to 92% with one dose when the second dose adds only a few percentage points.  Unfortunately j and j vaccine is in the sixties

Couple that with the side effects after the second dose.  I get my first tomorrow and we'll Decide later on the second since it requires another trip to bham.

wonder what the magic of dosing 30 days later vs six months later?

Good question.  Not sure about the efficacy of delaying the second shot but it appears to be 90% effective with the first.  The economist side of me says we should have given only first shots to more people because getting an additional 7% effectiveness for each second shot is nowhere near the bang for the buck to get more people the 90% effectiveness of a first shot.  That was what drove the decision in the UK and it appears to have been the case.

Sounds like you've heard the same as me that more people are having issues with the second shot.  My 88 year old Mom with COPD and some heart issues had her second shot with no issues other than a sore arm.  I am still in a holding pattern on the vaccine until some more time has elapsed to see if there are issues.  I just saw that Denmark (I think) temporarily halted one of the vaccines due to some clotting issues.  This has to be the biggest drug trial in history and only time will tell.  Either way, Operation Warpspeed was a miracle of science and occurred mostly because the bureaucracy got out of the way.  Only to reassert itself with the distribution.

Saw some idiot investigative reporter complaining about long lines at a FEMA distribution site in Florida and tried to blame DeSantis.  The media is truly stupid and the enemy of the people.  FEMA.....begins with Federal......sigh.......

Wanted the JNJ vac due to one shot but saw the Pfizer Ceo this morning and has completed both shots.  My brothers have had it with no problems and both have chronic issues and one still smokes!  Anyway, I will take whatever they have.

then I'm thru with all of this and return to life w/o mask.  Looking forward to going to Mass!

I only missed the first few weeks without mass and when we found out St. Vincent DePaul in Tallassee had mass we spent every weekend at the lake so we could attend in person until they started to have masses in Atlanta again.  My wife goes to daily mass and she really missed it so off to the lake we went...not that I needed an excuse to go.  The big winner of the pandemic was our dog who loves going to the lake.  Got his walk on the Lakeshore Trail, boat rides, chasing geese and otters and generally living the dream.  There's a reason they call it a dog's life.

Had 1st shot on Feb 16 using Phizer. Was scheduled for 2nd shot on March 9. Did not receive call. Heard on TV that FEMA had set up a No Appointment site. Got up at 4:30 AM, checked the Forum for the latest news, and left the house at 5AM. Drove  to the site arriving around 6:15. The line was forming as I was around the 50th car. They opened at 7 and I was out at 7:40. Very effient as the military was running it and giving the actual shots. It has been 2 days and feeling fine.

Watch for a FEMA site and get there before they open.

Here are 2 examples of favortism by Gov DeSantis in Florida.

Former Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner made a $250,000 campaign contribution to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis last week after seniors in the uber-wealthy Florida Keys enclave where Rauner owns a home were among the first in the state to receive COVID-19 vaccinations in January.

Rauner’s connection to the favorable treatment first was reported Wednesday by the Miami Herald, which obtained a memo the management of the exclusive Ocean Reef Clubin Key Largo sent to residents noting that its medical center had vaccinations for residents age 65 and over while most Floridians struggled to access the shots. DeSantis has used the state’s vaccination program to open special distribution sites in select communities while skipping state and local vaccine registration logs, various Florida news outlets have reported.

————————————————————

The already controversial Lakewood Ranch COVID-19 vaccination pod in Manatee County was carefully choreographed by organizers and the governor’s office to help him win reelection next year, texts obtained by the Bradenton Herald show.

Asked about the report Tuesday, DeSantis called it “nonsense” and suggested that the “partisan”news media didn’t want people in wealthy, Republican-leaning neighborhoods to get vaccinated.

The Lakewood “pop-up” site was limited to residents of two wealthy zip codes in Manatee County. Prominent Democrats have already called for an investigation after reports showed a Manatee commissioner included herself and developer Rex Jensen on a VIP list to get shots.

The Bradenton Herald and Miami Herald report revealed texts between Commissioner Vanessa Baugh and Jensen, including an exchange on Feb. 9 in which Jensen texted Baugh, “Gov said he might show up. Should try to see if that would help him get exposure here.”

“Excellent point,” Baugh responded, pivoting to DeSantis’ reelection campaign next year. “After all, ’22 is right around the corner.”

Jensen had just finished a call between DeSantis and another Lakewood Ranch developer, Pat Neal, the newspapers reported. Neal gave $125,000 to DeSantis’ political committee in 2018 and 2019, and two other pop-up sites in Venice and Sarasota also were set up at his developments.

An advance team from the governor’s office visited the Lakewood site, the report said. Instead of randomly determining who would get the vaccine at the DeSantis event kicking off the pod, text messages indicated the governor’s staff asked Jensen to create a list.

“Amazing. They want me to maintain a list. They can’t. Screw this,’' Jensen wrote to Baugh on Feb. 9 after speaking to the Florida Department of Health, according to the report. Baugh then directed the Manatee County public safety director to limit the vaccines to the two wealthy zip codes in which Lakewood was located, emails show.

at MB stadium in downtown Atlanta.  Jan 28 first shot arrived 24 mins before appt time and was called to get the stick 1 min before appt time.  Walked out in less than an hour including the early arrival.  Feb 18 second shot arrived 10 min early and literally walked right up to the table for the shot and was back at the car 25 mins after arrival.  Remember in both cases the time there includes the 15 min cool-down/oberservation time after we were stuck!  Very efficient operation with friendly staff.  No noticable after effects from either!  Other than cold windy weather both days an impressive show by Fulton County Health Dept and we weren't mugged or panhandled in downtown Atlanta...much to MM's and CRD's surprise on both counts I'm sure.

Glad to see that your experience was an efficient one Archie, however, even the local, state and fed gov't would have a hard time screwing single injections up.  Regarding your lack of harassment, maybe the APD has had its handcuffs removed and is able to de-litter the streets around MB and surrounding areas.   The significant increase in violent crime in Atlanta in 2021 is a tragedy for a once vibrant city.  Mayor Bottoms must be taking the violent crime seriously as she spent last week relaxing away from the mayhem at an exclusive community in Santa Rosa, Florida.

Signed the form and stuck within 5 minutes of arriving.  Proceeded to the exit area and waited my 15 minutes.  What a great surprise.

It is again about leadership Archie.  Simply because she may spend more weekends at home than I do (which I doubt), does not make her a competent mayor or leader.  Case in point, WAYS took me through some back roads yesterday through Lakewood, Pryor Street neighborhoods in order to avoid connector traffic as I made my way to meet family in Buckhead for dinner.   I and another vehicle stopped at an intersection south of the capitol.  While waiting for the light to change, four upstanding "yutes" in loud dirt bikes, face coverings and bandanas pulled in front of our two cars lined up, side by side at a 45 degree angle, essentially blocking us in.  I could see the female driver next to me close her windows with a somewhat frightened look on her face as these citizens raced their engines and stared back at us.  This is occurring in broad daylight mind you.  As the light turned, they turned and raced across the intersection with no regard to oncoming traffic.  Being familiar with the Grady area, nothing really surprises me, however, is this a small microcosm of what Atlanta has become?  The license plate of the woman next to me was from Florida.  She was most likely following directions from an app as well.  Shirtless joggers with little regard for vehicle traffic on Peachtree Street in Buckhead near upscale shops and hotels?  And don't even ask me about the atmosphere in Buckhead last weekend during the NBA All Star weekend.

Yes Archie, most people with more than one home do spend time at both residences.  Taking a cue from Dems, (Trump was also criticized for his time at the Florida White House in Mar-a-Lago and for playing golf, remember?) criticism of the Mayor of Atlanta is certainly fair game when one sees the condition of her city.  Buckhead secession?  Great idea.  Could  not happen fast enough.  Let the communities surrounding Atlanta try to recover with competent leadership while the city proper squanders its heritage with consistent selection of Mayors and city council members with limited abilities and vision.

Every politician better be prepared for criticism, whether deserved or not, or they need to get out of politics.  The mayor is no exception, but please base that critcism on provable facts not rumors, on what she is doing or not doing, advocating or not advocating or saying or not saying rather than on where she spends her weekends.  If spending time at a resort rather than in the office was a capital offense your professed ''hero'' would be on death row if not already being referred to as the ''late former president''!

Optics and results Archie.  Glad to see Bottoms freely choosing to vacation in a state where the Governor (despite harsh media criticism for over a year) has proven he really knows what he is doing relative to COVID as opposed to blue state lock down governors.  She must now be a convert to forward, intelligent thinking or why else would she choose to expose herself and her family to the horrors of an open red state.   If only she could apply that same optimism and vision to her mayoral duties.  However, I am sure the Dem power brokers would not let that happen.

Now if you think DeSantis has done an admirable job with Covid you need to discuss it with some Floridians who do not reside in gated communities.  I'm sure you don't intend it, but you often come across as someone completely unaware that lots of Americans are not as well set as you and me.  If you are 85 years old and don't drive or have a regular income or savings much less investments and not are familiar with the personal computer life is very different for you.  You might have lost a leg in Korea but so what, if you can't do it for yourself...tough.

1/  Atlanta, like all cities has its problems, but economic and job growth, construction permits, population growth and other markers of a city's viability demonstrate Atlanta is certainly considered one of the most desirable place to be today and for sure a better place to live today than 60 or 40 or 20 years ago.

2/  The sububs of Atlanta are adding more people than the city of Atlanta because, as in most major cities, the burbs make up a vast majority of the metro population (90% in Atlanta according to the 2010 census)

3/  For the last decade the city of Atlanta has had a faster percentage growth than the suburbs.

4/  If you think the newcomers to the city of Atlanta are welfare scum l suggest you look at all the demographic facts af the thousands of new folks flocking to the new housing in Old 4th Ward, Mid-town, Downtown, Reynoldstown, the Westside and Castleberry Hill to name a few.  A large number of which are infact moving in from those suburbs!  They cover the spectrum but with the largest share being young (20's -40's) upwardly mobile professionals.  The very demographic that is the market target for almost every business today and that FOX is failing to attarct.

5/  Just for once in your life as a self loathing sad old seg racist, get a few facts before you go off half cocked.

I apologize Archie, I was unaware that the current Florida COVID statistics only applied to those in "gated communities".  Thanks for the clarification.

And BTW, regarding your comment as to my "feelings" toward those less fortunate than myself, my professional charitable service to those not only on a fixed income but truly "self pay" allows me to sleep at night knowing how much I am hoarding away under my mattress.

Now, what all of this has to do with the incompetence of Atlanta political leadership remains a mystery.  And also, my wife is a rare Atlanta native, having attended the best private HS in the area during her teen years (well known) and witnessing the demise of her once quaint and safe hometown over the past 60 odd years.  Might I say, she would beg to differ with your opinion of what Atlanta has become and cannot wait for the day to let the door hit her in the rear end as she exits what has become for her, an average metro area, not exceptional, not well taken care of, not policed well, void of innovative thinking and action.

Just curious, why was it so important that you had to mention the ''the best private HS (well known)''?  What the he!! does that have to do with your point?  Was it to make all those multitudes who went to public schools either feel somehow inferior or pissed of at you for flounting your self-assured superiority?

The FL Covid stats apply to all FL citizens...it's just a lot easier and quicker to become part of the statistics if you happen to reside in a gated community where a lot of residents made big contributions to the Guv's campaign.

Means to an end until the parachute opens Archie.  Don't live in Fulton County, would never do so.  My comments regarding my wife's HS was simply to indicate her upbringing in Atlanta.  She does not wear it on her sleave, her family had to put her there when they really could not afford it because of blatant, aggressive, shall we say abusive behaviour by a certain element of the southside public school population.

I see that 'ol Mayor Keisha is now blaming the astronomical rise in the ATL crime rate (39% increase in 2020) as being a product of Atlanta being "open for business".  Funny how she chose a site in Florida, which has been open for going on 6 months, to vacation 2 weeks ago.  Was she not concerned with potential crime there?  She also received a letter from a developer in Atlanta yesterday who had to board up one of his properties because of vandalism.  A few snippets:

Tom Aderhold of Aderhold Properties said he lost business, and his employees do not feel safe. So over the weekend, he wrote a letter to Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.

“As a significant landowner and taxpayer in the city of Atlanta, this level of incivility is simply unacceptable,” he wrote.

On Monday, Seiden stopped by one of Aderhold’s buildings at 56 Peachtree Street to check out some of the damage left behind after Aderhold said a homeless person used rocks to shatter the storefront.

“One of our female leasing agents has asked not to be sent to our Muses property again due to the amount of verbal abuse she suffers walking from her car to the office,” Aderhold wrote.

He also described the growing homeless population at Woodruff Park, saying that there’s been a significant “increase in tent camping.”

He also accused some of the men of “using the streets and sidewalks as a bathroom with impunity and harassing anyone within range.”

Does this qualify, as you had suggested that I offer previously,  "provable fact"?  You cannot defend your Mayor, Archie.  But you can defend your citizenry putting the same incompetent, unaccomplished, spineless individuals in positions of leadership, both on a local and national level.    This sounds vaguely familiar, does it not?  And if you offer a response, try not to include the name "Trump".

None of the housing is subsidized.  it is all privately developed with private money.  Some of the units (usually 10%) in some projects are set aside to rent or sell for below market rates because the private developers get Federal and city tax breaks if the do so but no direct subsidy to resident...these ar not section 8 places WIX.  My problem is even at the reduced rates they are too rich for my blood...Thank God I bought into the neighborhood in 1980 because I couldn't afford it now.  The market rate units are selling for $350 to $500 per SF or renting for $2.00 per SF up.

To the extent they have kids they mostly go the oublic schools.  The 3 elementary schools serving the hottest areas (Morningside, Mary Lin, and Springdale elementary) are overcrowded because of the influx and all 3 are either being expanded or have expansions planned.  A middle school (Inman) is being renovated and converted to an elementary school as soon as the new middle now under construction is completed.

We ain't talking Birmingham here WIX!

You miss my point completely.  I agree, a free country allows one to travel anywhere they choose.  The POTUS has a mobile WH anywhere he goes, in Trump's case he was not critical of the places you mentioned unlike Bottoms, whose party was hypercritical of Desantis' COVID strategy yet a place she freely chose to spend time.  On top of that, as I mentioned, she blamed ATL's rising crime rate on opening up, yet chose to spend a vacation in an area that has been open for months without the crime seen in ATL.  Would she have made the decision that she did if the AJC was doing their job, holding her feet to the fire for her malfeasance as Mayor?  She knows she is protected, and she and her party's hyprocrisy is all that I bring to your attention.
