Subject:   My annual July hunt for bass!
Date:   6/24/2004 3:08:19 PM

As anyone well knows who follows this website on a yearly basis over the past 5 years every summer my two boys and I make our pilgimage to Lake Martin. One, to visit their grandparents (who do not fish and have no interest in learning to fish) and Two, to catch the ever evasive bass. When my boys and I first started out they were 5 and 2 years of age. This summer they have grown into two great boys now 11 and 7. Over the years I post questions seeking help and am never short in receiving replies with great advise. Alas, my boys and I are still bassless. Which is a far cry from our original alias "Fishless". Thanks to all the help I have received over these past years we have been able to catch all kinds of fish and the boys have a great time. Last year we even caught our first catfish. However, this year once again we are after the fish they never seems to take our bait, the bass. We plan on ending our drought this summer. To that end we once again turn to the people who know this lake better then anyone else and ask for any advice that will help us attain our ultimate prize. We will be there July 7 to July 13. We have a boat and are able to get around the lake if there is a spot that may contain the foe we seek. Any help we be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Well, I can offer you some advice for Inexpensive fun to the best of my ability.

1) What type of boat do you have? If you do not have access to and expensive bass boat and all the fun electronic gadgets (cheat devices... in my opinion >=) ) then you may wish to try trolling. I have trolled for the better part of 12 years always managing to put something in the cooler. However the last few years have shown a decline in Small and Large mouth bass and a larger abundance in Saltwater Stripe and Hybrids (white bass). The ratio of Stripe to Bass in my cooler is around 3:1. Anyway... on the the fishing. I use four poles with spinner reals (the seem to work better than baitcasters for trolling, although you could make baitcasters work). I fish in a 14 foot aluminum boat with a 15hp Nissian motor. I use 3 rod holders that you can get from wall-mart (the kind they design to be used from shore) I simply use the top portion that holds the road and bolt it to the side of the (2 on the right, 1 on the left) at different locations, and I put the last rod under my seat on the port side so that there are 2 rods on each side of the boat. It is important that you put each line out a differnt length to prevent them from becoming tangled, for example: the pole under the seat 12 ft, the next port pole 24ft, the first starboard pole 32ft, and the second startboard pole 40ft. These are rough estimates and you can use "trial and error" to figure the best distances for your particular aplication. For bait I use medium size swivels and rattletraps. Right now they seem to be most attracted to silver but you can try differernt things. If you must catch a bass then try around the Kowlediga bridge and the old bridge wreckage. Go as slow as you can, open a beer.... and let the fish do all the work. If you are not close to the bridge then try a shady area early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Even around pears. This might seem like alot of trouble but i'll leave that up to you. Enjoy and good luck.

Try jigging spoons where you see fish on the depth finder. If you dont have one try trolling a fat rap just far enough from the bank not to get stuck. This can be fun.

5. Lake Martin - It is illegal to possess more than two white bass, yellow bass, saltwater striped bass and hybrids or combinations over 16 inches in total length in the daily creel limit.

You can go to outdooralabama.com and get more info on fishing and the rules and regs.

Thanks for the advise. I have my father-in-laws boat which is not a bass boat but one to drive around the lake and maybe ski behind. However, I think we can troll around some sloughs. I think we will give this technic a try this next week also. If nothing else I am sure the boys will have some fun. Thank you very much.

Well, I would like to report that the string of bad luck has ended and that my boys and I are newly annointed members of that cherished club of bass catchers. However, our troubles continue to haunt us. In fact, this year will probably go down as one of our worst fishing trips in the annals of fishing. Now I see why fisherman always are heard saying the big one got away. You have to say that in order to convince yourself that all the aggravation you just went throug was worth coming back for next year. If it could go wrong this time it did. Now, even my boys look at me and shake their heads in disgust when they see me trying to convince them that we will catch some bass. I could bore you with all the details but I do not think I want to relive the experience. To make matters worse even the boat broke down. Oh well, I am no quiter and next year my boys and I will be back for another fun-filled week of anguish and dispair. I would like to thank everyone for their advice even though I really never had a chance to use it this time. Rest assured this forum has not heard the last of me. In the words of the legendary govenor from California (Arnonld Schwarzenagger) "I WILL BE BACK!!!"
