I see no cracks or major hull damage, and I have replaced the drain plug. I have looked closely around the transom and motor mount. The boat seems to take on water and requires frequent bilging. Has the hull become pourous? Is there a recommended sealant that the hull should be coated with? I am not overly concerned with appearance (sparkle) but certainly not looking for something gaudy. Does not seem to be any danger of sinking but the boat does become noticeably heavier.

Out board or Inboard? Live well that sucks out of thelake? Other through hull fittings?

Outboard - Johnson 150. Three live wells. Not sure of question but leakage is with livewells dry. You may have something here that I am simply ignorant about??? I know you have to turn livewells on with switch and turn faucet to fill. There are drain plugs in bottom of livewells.

I have pulled my boat out of the water. Parked on dry pavement. Let everything dry (for example, pads on trailer). Then took a hose and carefully (be sure not to wet the pavement)filled the boat to the water line it has while in water. Let it set for a long time and tried to find any wet spots. This should tell you if you have a problem NOT related to motion of the boat.

Certainly, water could only be coming in only when it is in motion. My trick won't help there.

Thanks greycove, That is an idea. The leak problem seems to appear both docked and in motion. Probably a little more when moving. You can not see the water in the boat by looking into the battery or fuel compartments??? Your idea would be cheap enough to try. Just have to find the time to do it the next time I am down. I do keep it out of the water when not in use.

Here are some other thoughts.
Anywhere you have fittings that pass through the hull at or below the water line are suspect. Here is the one most people miss. The rub rail, if not properly sealed on the underside, on some boats will pass water into the hull at certain speeds. When the tail of the boat is down durring slow acceleration the rail either gets splash or is actually under water for a little bit.

My rub definitely is not sealed as wash will sometimes blow the rubber insert....do you have any suggestions as to what i can seal it with? And if so should I seal the bottom and the top of the rub rail?

Thanks for your time
Joe

Feb,
Was having the same problem on a fishing boat in the late eighties. The leak was slow and I could never find it. One day I was fishing up front while the wife was soaking up some sun in the back. She calmly asked "Was all this water supose to be in the boat?". It was 10 inches deep!!!

I quickly took off up the lake hoping to make it back to the ramp. At a high speed I noticed the water going down. I slowed and asked the wife to take over. Opening one of the back compartment I could see where the pump that draws water into the live well had broken. I plugged the intake hole in transon and we stayed on the lake a few more hours.

I say all of this to say check the pump. At the time my boat was new. I guess it was installed with a hairline crack. After replacing it, I never had the water problem again.

Thanks to everyone that took the time to respond and brainstorm some excelent posibilities. I am beginning to suspect the live well theory. The boat water fill recomendation seems to have merit and could possible even disclose or discount the live well possibility. Next Spring I will search for the truth of the leaky boat dilema..

The boat fill method works great! Found my leak last spring in about 5 minutes. Also check the spedometer tubing as water flows through it to give you a reading. Any leak here can add water to a boat, however you said this also happens docked so probably not the case. Good luck
