I'm a new Lake Martin resident/fisherman. Out yesterday, I saw several schools of what I believer are white bass. Reminded me of the spanish in Pensacola Bay - that was some fun fishing. Tried several lures including a white jig, silver spoon, and a Rat-L-Trap, but got no takers. What are the best lures for these fish? Any other hints on catching these fish?
Thanks.

I forget the name of the lure, but it's a top water straight-back with blue on top, silver/white on the belly...about 6 inches long...

I've had a lot of success trolling with Rapala DT-10 and DT-16 crankbaits. Color seems to make a big difference, most success has come with the baby bass color and shad (black and silver).

While I started trolling a few years ago looking for stripe, I catch a lot of white bass and spotted/large bass. White bass is 2-1 to large mouth and spotted. The bass (all 3) school around the lake. In the evenings the 10 footers work better, in the heat of the day the 16 footers work best.

Troll at 2-3 mph and watch your fish finder. Somedays they are sitting off ledges in 10-15 water and sometimes I just troll open water and will run through a school and catch three at a time.

I went today at noon, it was high sun and hot and still caught 3 white bass and a nice spotted bass in about 1 hour. A few weeks ago I went at 5pm and trolled for 2 hours and caught about a dozen bass. The biggest was about 2.5 pounds most were about a 1.5 pounds, but they fight good and eat good. However, big white bass can be a bit fishy tasting.
