This past weekend I FINALLY got the boat back on the water and did a little fishing. I did what I always do in the late afternoon in late October and fished a creek up past Real Island where dozens of schools of shad bunch up. I usually have good days fishing around these schools for the bass gorging themselves on the shad. However, this time there was very little evidence of a good shad run. I hardly saw any shad except in the very back of the creek where the lake was down into the channel. I don't know about every creek since I didn't want to waste my limited fishing time running from creek to creek, but are the shad in the creeks? Is it stiil too early, or perhaps too late?

Did you find them? Where? Are the striper starting to bust the shad on top?

I was going after the spots up past Real Island. Since I am fishing out of a jonboat, I am wary of fishing down the lake from that point since it is usually too windy to fish the way I want. Anyway, I caught about a dozen in less than three hours in the backs of creeks in the late afternoon. The bass were really stacked up and were hitting best on Rapalas, shallow diving crankbaits, and topwaters. I have never heard of stripes that far up the lake, although I do catch some white bass up there. However, I would like to try some similar creeks further down the lake. An old family friend with a house just downlake from Real Island told me that he has seen stripes busting shad in front of his place, and he is almost to the back of one of the creeks. I probably could have fished it since the lake was relatively calm, but since I was doing so well uplake, I didn't see the need to try something different.
