Subject:   Bass on spawning beds

This is on another link. I thought I'd put it here. These are my thoughts exactly. I would also add the style of livewell upgrading that starts like this:
Catch 12 bass over their beds. Never mind that at some times they will be the little males guarding the spawn. Then upgrade the livewell as you catch more. Release the little males where you catch the next bigger fish. The spawn bed you removed the male from now has no guard and will be eaten as soon as bream and others can find it.

Fishing Limits on Lake Martin: A Look

Article Date: 2/27/2006

Good news as we move rapidly toward spring time here on Lake Martin. Rain has washed some nutrients into the lake which is good for all species of fish. Rain has also raised the lake levels as slowly the lake is starting toward filling up for the spring and summer months. As all this happens we will find that fish are moving into pre spawn areas getting ready for the spawn.

From this point on you may find what I have to say a little off beat to what you see on T.V. as the Bassmasters tour is taking up several hours of time showing their main event the Bass Classic. It seems that as we age we have the ability to look back and see things that we may have done wrong and hopefully have time to correct them before we pass from this earth. Ray Scott for all the major things he has done for the sport of bass fishing did not do one thing that I see as very important to our fishery along with other lakes around the state and country. He has never made a stand against bed fishing for bass.

Oh yes! Put me on record as saying that I think that bed fishing for bass is wrong. We catch enough bass that are bedding that we don’t see to allow sight fishing for large bass on the bed. We say the sport of bass fishing but where do you find in any other sport outdoors that you hunt and take any species off the bed. Not in deer hunting, not in turkey hunting and not in any other game sport that I know of do we stalk for the purpose of taking them when they are bedding. Yet we continue in 2006 to allow sight fishing for large bass for the sake of big money. We also promote it through T.V. as the thing to do.

As much as I love to fish I would gladly agree to an off limit time for bass fishing on Lake Martin to allow the bass time to spawn and get off the beds. We must look ahead and realize that something has to done now for the future of the lake. Each year the lake continues to survive. Now read back I said survive but that is about all it does it does not grow in numbers of bass just survive. At some point survive is not enough. There have been great steps in live release and in lower limits for bass events but there has to be much more done if we are to see the fishery grow instead of falling off each year. Just think what if we had off limits for bass fishing during spawn what a difference it might make in the future of the lake. During spawn we could still fish for other species of fish in the lake just not bass. Now that is the way I see it at the start of spring 2006. Step up make a difference call the state or email them and just ask that they look into the situation in a serious manner and make that small change at every lake around the state. Just maybe we in Alabama could become a leader for all the states to adopt this new approach to bass fishing during spawning time. Till next week I’ve gone fishing.
