Subject:   Merc. Outboard Water Pump ?
Date:   5/10/2006 8:07:31 PM

I have a possible problem with my 1983 Mercury 200 Black Max outboard.
Before I put it in the water for the first time this year, I cleaned out some dirtdauber mud from the "pee hole" and cranked it with the water ears on.
Everything worked fine....nice strong stream of water coming from the pee hole. I put it in yesterday and and it ran great...water was coming from pee hole right after I cranked it and continued to work properly as I ran it for a while....BUT when I was approaching my dock and throttled down to idle, it quit peeing....I throttled up again almost to plane-off and
still no water from pee hole....I cut the engine off, waited a few minutes, and cranked again........was peeing like a champ again!......I repeated this
two or three times to make sure no fluke....same result....SO, should I
assume that the water pump or a seal or gasket needs replacing?
Any ideas on this would be much appreciated.

Just when was the last time you replaced this water pump?

I have only had the boat for a year or so but good friends with the previous owner. I would say that it has probably been at least 5 yrs since any part was replaced other than those used in a routine tune-up. Thanks, CAT.

Requirement for powerboat owner/customer of Cathouse Marine--- put new water pump on every spring. LOL, hopes that fixes it.

Easy fix...I change the water impeller on my Merc 115 every other season. Purchase the impeller for less than 30 bucks, unscrew 4 or 5 bolts on lower unit, drop the lower, replace impeller, put it all back together. 15 minutes max. While it is dropped you can check the seals/gaskets. A full kit i.e. water impeller and all gaskets is obviously higher in cost and time involved. My guess is the impeller is old and perhaps stripped out. If you let a dealer change your impeller, they will charge about $110.00 at Montgomery Marine to $250.00 at Kowaliga marina. Good Luck.

Thanks, ARP, CAT----am considering doing it myself......should I worry about torque specs on the bolts or just firm them up good without overtightening?

This was taken from the SELOC manual.
36. Tighten the 3/8 in.-16 nuts securing the lower unit to the intermediate housing to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).

37. Tighten the 7/16 in.-20 nuts or bolts securing the lower unit to the intermediate housing to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).

38. Tighten the trim tab bolt to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).

Good Luck...
