Well after finding out that I'm not supposed to run the boat with the trim pulled all the way up ... even if it is just helping it onto the trailer. I have discovered that I need to replace my U-joints and gimble bearing. I have pretty good mechanical knowlege and have researched this removal and installation and it does not seem to be very hard. Anyways I have two quesitons. One i have heard a lot about bellows needing to be replaced with everything else when I pull out the outdrive and that if I don't they will fail and the boat will sink. Is this true or just a precaution? Also for someone with pretty good mechanical skills who has rebuilt a couple of engines and restored a few cars how feasible is this whole operation? Any input would be great. Thanks

yes sir, running the drive at an extreme angle is a mistake, especialy when under power.anyways to your question, first of all is the drive a merc?if it is,most of the time the bellows will be ok,but they do need to be inspected for mainly dry rot and cracking, mainly on the shift cable bellow,as it is the most taxed and also the thinest of the bellows.if the shift bellow is in good shape then you will prolly be just fine to knock in a gimbal and u joints and keep riding.p sthe shift bellow is also the smallest one that will be to starboard, turn the drive to port and trim up,the bellows can be inspected this way.and yes the job can be done by you, just pay attention to what you are doing and should be a breeze.make sure to replace drive to bell housing gaskets and or orings.make sure gimbal grease hole lines up with hole in transom assembly, grease new u joints, and also make sure to have slide hammer availabe to pull old gimbal.hope this helps.

you may want to replace the u joint bellows..i found the hard way {after 4 bearings being replaced in 1.5 yrs. } they can develope very very small holes in them. i found mine by getting in a closet closing the door and using a flash lite to locate the very small pin hole....ouch in the wallet department.
