Is trolling for bass considered legitimate fishing by most fishermen? OR....is it considered something less than real fishing? Am curious. thanks

to me it's not, they don't allow it in bass events.

You did not say where. In many States trolling, by hand rowing, is a time honored custom.

I'm not sure why anyone would consider it a "lesser" form of fishing. Seems like that is a pretty popular way to fish for salmon in fresh water as well as for all sorts of salt water species.
Trolling is one way to cover a lot of water and show the bait to large numbers of fish. Do you suppose fly fishermen consider throwing plastic baits a "lesser" form of fishing?

Actually, fly fishermen consider anything a lesser form of fishing. Seriously, I don't have any problems trolling, especially since I don't have the right kind of boat to fish over deep structure unless I either troll or drift over it. I have caught some nice bass that way. One other thing. While you can't troll in bass tournaments, you can drift fish. drifting is not that much different from trolling, and you can use more different types of lures by drifting.

No I do not. Because there is no skill or knowledge in it. When you go bass fishing you have to use your electronics, instinct, and knowledge of where the bass are at that time. When you troll your just picking a color and throwing it out. No skill involved. I never do it. Its just a waste to me. I fish for the thill of the "hunt for fish" and for the technique.

There is plenty of skill that goes into trolling, especially when you don't have electronics to help you, and you are relying on knowledge and instinct. I troll specific areas that require precise positioning in order to catch fish. I won't waste my time and gas puttering through open water. I will target likely looking areas or submerged structure that I have discovered during low water times, and frequently experiment with speed and direction in order to find out what works. When you fish from a 14 foot jon boat with no fish finder and no electric trolling motor, parking on top of a main lake hump or long point and dragging a jig or Carolina rig is not an option. Trolling or drifting are the only ways I can fish the main lake without being blown off of the water or run down by the big dog boats.

Well ya know I never really thought about it that way. I dont have what you might call a big dog boat, hell I dont even have a boat. I fish out of my fiancee's brother boat that he is nice enough to let me use. We have a 14ft aluminum boat with a 25 hoarse motor. But we are fortunate enough to have a humming bird 525 and a trolling motor and that makes a bid difference. I guess when you only have a boat and no electronics or trolling motor well then trolling is the best way. I would definitely suggest getting a fish finder first then a trolling motor. Fish finders make a HUGE difference but you have to learn to use it.
