So I am going to paint my boat myself this summer and in the process of researching paints and techniques I have greatly confused myself. Different articles say different things so I'm hoping that someone out there can help me. My main concern is if I need Anti-fouling paint or not... I haven't used my boat in salt water but I don't to rule out the possibility of doing so by using the wrong paint. I have been told that If I want to use regular topside paint on the whole thing that I can but if I do I will not be able to leave the boat in the water for more than a couple of days at a time. However no antifouling paint colors match up with topside colors and I want to paint the whole thing the same color red. Does anyone know if there is a Clear coat anti fouling paint or if I really will be ok painting the whole boat with topside paint?? By the way I am looking at Interlux products. Thanks for the help.

You can use a boat without anti-foulant paint in salt water for a least a week at a time without damage. Once you bottom paint a boat it is very difficult to get off or paint over. Only ablative bottom paints can be used on trailered boats--regular bottom paints 'die' once they're taken out of the water and cease to be effective the next time you put in salt water.

You will not need bottom paint in Lake Martin. Pressure washing after a season in the water is all that is needed.

I've had boats in salt water for 25 years.
