Subject:	Mercury 115 steering frozen

Over the winter the steering on my motor froze. Suspect corroded inside. Use to operate motor in salt water. Tapped real hard on the output shaft that connects to the motor via the short arm. It moved slightly, but extremely tight. Can't get any rust busters into the steering head to help. Anyone had and solved this problem?
Boat on lift in boathouse, so can't easily trailer to mechanic.

I will not be of help to you at this moment (old timers disease). But yes I did have the same problem years ago on a Mercury 115. I remember it gave me fits trying to fix it, but I did get it freed up. Problem is .... I can't remember how I did it. I will continue turn the rusty gears in my head and if I remember, I'll get back to you. Sorry I'm of no help but wanted to respond so that you know someone is reading.

Be careful freeing up the system. If it is damaged to bad, you just may free it up, only to have it break while at speed and pitch everyone out of the boat. Usually, steering cables break/freeze up from lack of maintainance. Let me know if you need help.
