I have just purchased a new 2005 70HP Johnson ( AKA Suzuki DF-70) 4-stroke. The manual says to have the valve clearances checked after 10 hours (Suzuki calls for 20 hours), which is quite a service chore. Pulling valve cover, gaskets, removing hoses, etc.. Anybody have any experience if this is REALLY necessary this soon? Why not wait until seasons end, as long as you change the oil as recommended yourself? I have had many a foreign pickup truck with solid lifters, and have never burned a valve yet by not checking the valve clearance. This would be like driving a car 500 miles!! The engine is identical to a Suzuki auto engine in the valve train area, so they say. Seems this is just a way for the dealer to make a little extra money as well as a real pain.

Thanks

as an engine builder there is one thing that i can say, valves take a seat, and clearances do change after initial setup.you will prolly notice that in the manual it might call for a 10 hr valve check then after that it might not call for it for another 100 hrs.i would do the check, chances are no adjustment is needed but better safe than sorry.as for cover gasket...they are a rubber gasket and are reusable if taken care during disassembly.also as far as the 500 mile comment, one thing to consider is rpm and load, marine engines are under higher loads and rpm so in truth 10 hrs on a marine motor is equal to in the neigborhood of 200 in the auto world.hope this helps. jeff power unlimited marine 256 749 1584

Thanks,

I run 3500 - 4000 rpm normally at cruise (pontoon), and the WOT on this engine is 5400-5800. I was just hoping to get to the end of the season before putting it in the shop for maybe several weeks during "prime time".
