Would a six horsepower, 4-stroke, engine plane a 12 foot jon boat with two adults aboard? Want to buy one and hope to be able to ride during this very low water summer.

Any one with experience would be appreciated.

I would say not, if indeed your post is serious. 6hp might not plane it with nobody in the boat. I am missing the lake also.

You are correct in your assumption. I am grounded but can drag the ole jon to auqua. What hp do I need to reasonably plane a 12 footer?

I had a 8' RHI (rigid hull inflatable) growing up and we could just get it to plane up with a 4 HP envinrude with myself and my younger brother in it. We put an 8 HP mariner on it and it would do pretty good. I would say that you would need at least a 15. I would check some engine manufactures websites or call a local motor retailer. Also the boat should have a max HP rating. Too much motor and you could rip the transom off.

I had a little 10 or 12 ft jon boat back in the late 60's with a 3 evinrude at the lake planed off fine.

For the money why not go ahead and step up to a 10 hp mercury 4 stroke.

One problem I have with a motor 10 or more hp is weight. I don't live on the lake fulltime, therefore I have to remove the motor from the jon boat and store inside my shop. The 6hp weighs around 60 pounds, but weight goes up quickly with more horsepower. From all your comments, I may have to ride slower or the wife and I need to lose weight.

I will see what a 9 or 10 weighs. Thanks for your feedback.

The "wife losing weight" comment probably just cost you the boat anyway. So, it really don't matter now.

Check the weight of the 4 stoke and you will find it is heavier than a 2 stroke. The 15 hp Yamaha 4 stroke weighs 113 lb vs 79 for a 2 stroke. The 9.9 4 stroke is 99 lbs vs 79 for the 2 stroke.

I put an 18 hp evinrude on a 14' jon boat once and was WAY, WAY overpowered...almost lost it (and my life) in the middle of the lake....I think you would do just fine with a 7-10 hp motor.

For all you oldies, I use to own a 20hp. Wizard and I would rent a 14' flat bottom alluminum boat at the river bridge. Man that thing would push that boat with two people easily.

I have a 12’ Basstender that is a heavy boat compared to most Jon Boats. It has a raised front fishing platform, livewell, bilge pump, etc making it even heavier than the average Jon Boat and I power it with an 8 hp – 2 stroke Mercury. It planes out just fine and will haul bu** once it gets on plane. I leave the boat at the water, but take the motor back and forth to my garage, so weight is a factor for me. I could not handle any larger motor.
