While cruising today I came up with a question some of you might know the answer to.

At Griffitt Bend, there are 3 hazard markers at what seems to be mid channel. What are they marking? I always stay toward the St. Clair County side through there but it also appears to be plenty of water between the markers and the Talladega County side. Is there?

Second. Who can we ask about replacing them? I know my eyes aren't as good as they used to be but I couldn't see them till I was pretty close while coming upstream and I was looking for them. They seem faded.

Peace,
<><

It is REAL shallow near the markers. I run with sonar, and it will go from 20 feet to 3 feet in no time. I too stay on the St. Clair side, but I see other boats on the Talladega side as well. Even on the St. Clair side, you have to stay midway between the markers, and the shoreline or you could be in trouble.

Seems to be plenty wide between them and the shore though so is there just a ridge that runs right through there?

I believe so Chris at this water level i would steer clear. Injunjons advice from his expereince with sonar tells me enough. wish I could remember where i found a version of a topo map on line once it answers all the depth questions you may have if I find that again I'll post it David

But what about getting some of the markers replaced? Who can we contact?

Funny thing about this area we're talking about. I haven't seen the water get low enough that you actually see the hazard there which is what makes this such a dangerous area. You get too close to the markers, hit ground and rip the running gear out of your boat. Some of the other places, where the markers are sitting high and dry now, we see them, and know whats under there when the water comes back up.

I was going to ride between the markers and the Talladega County side on the Sea Doo. But the Sea Doo is broke now so that will have to wait for another day. Don't want to take a chance with the only thing I have left that floats.

Peace,

Yeah that's interesting. Has anyone seen what's under these when the lake is at winter levels? This past winter the lake was super low so I would think with a 5 foot drop you'd be able to see them. Otherwise whatever is under there is more than 5ft below the surface. Which in looking at the lake map, there is a lot of areas that are only between 5ft and 10ft deep.

So I wonder what is under there? We need one of those sonar type depth finders they featured in the B'ham news a few weeks ago showing all of the sunken bridge details on Lay. :-)

I'm not sure what's there, but I ran it again this weekend. The water is down even more, but I went from 30' to 12' to 2 1/2' in distance of about 20'. There is a channel there, but It definately isn't in a straight line - it has to zig zag through there. Going north, once I pass the markers, I head for the Talladega side & pick the channel back up... I think looking at a topo will tell us more.
