Hey guys,

We are new to the lake. We love it by the way low water or not. We were on the pier this weekend and since the water is so low I saw a snake perched on a log or rock or something with his head barely poking up. It looked like it had a triangle head with maybe a diamond pattern, not quite sure. Does anyone know what it was and is it poison?

By the way where are all the girls on this forum?

Hello KKel, what part of the lake are you on?

We bought our place last year about this time and at the time our neighbors had been feeding ducks in our slough and said it had been years since they had seen a snake. They thought it was because of the ducks, who knows......

This past weekend tho, twice we saw a small snake in the water. it was maybe 6 inches long and maybe a bit larger than a pencil. Either way I CANNOT STAND SNAKES, I don't care how big or small, if they serve a purpose or not. The only snake I like is a DEAD one.

Sorry to all of the nature lovers that I may have offended but nope, noway, nohow when it comes to snakes, they will lose their head around me. So anyone that wants to come rescue them from my slough I will supply you with all of the refreshment you need while retrieving them.

If you saw one with a triangle head I would be extra careful. Google snakes under the picture part and look for a picture similar and read up about it.

My wife and daughter are usually at the lake but rarely look at this forum unless it is over my shoulder.

Welcome and we hope that you stay, we all seem to be harmless.

We just bought a house off of Stemley. We have a couple of little ducks around. I have little ones and they play in the shallow part of the water. I guess I will try to do some research, hopefully if we are around the snake will stay away. If not I don't care if it is not poison I am like you the only snake I like to see is a dead one.

I have learned a lot about the lake from the forum and can't wait to actually get out and enjoy it!

thanks,
kkel

Where around Stemley. We're in Stemley cove, all the way in the back. I've only seen one snake since being here 2 years and it was already dead. Drug up by turtles I think.

We have quite a few owls back in our corner and they must keep the snakes out.

Welcome. I'm half a mile south of the bridge myself.

I've been here 2 years next month and have seen one snake. A 5 foot long king snake on my lower deck right outside the door. I didn't get a chance to kill it but probably wouldn't have if I could. King snakes are dominant and keep the other snakes away.

That being said, if I hadn't had someone with me that identified it right away and my pest control guy encouraging me to leave it alone, it would be the best kind of snake right now...dead as a hammer. Even though my lot was very overgrown when I got here and I have been working it pretty constantly, that is the only one I have seen. My son said he saw one in the water but I haven't.

Triangle head is a give away to me, kill it if you safely can. I'm also told having dogs or cats around will help. Snakes don't hang around where there is a cat I'm told.

Again, welcome.

Peace,
<><

We killed two snakes last W/E near Powells that someone said was water moccisans but I did not see their heads before being killed. I don't think they were posionous but someone else said they looked like banded water snakes since the bodies were not big enough around from what I have seen on water Moc. I hope they were right but can anyone tell me what markings are on a banded water snake ?

Sounds like a cottonmouth...Cottonmouth's will be dark with a triangle head (pits)...a banded water snake is skinny with diamond shaped patterns..The snake is brownish in color with those black diamond shapes on it's back..The water snakes can get pretty big, but most you see will be less than 3 feet long....Either way most of the time if in water a snake will run from you unless you find a bed.....

I'm no expert, but I used to keep snakes & alligators as pets (yes alligators - we were able to buy them in Florida many years ago). Most of what you will see there will be water snakes. Banded water snakes have a few different patterns because they have subspecies. Clues that will positively identify poisonous snakes are: triangular shaped head with pits in front of the eyes, vertical pupils (like a cat - non-poisonous are perfectly round), and a single row of scales all the way down to the tail (non-poisonous will have a double row from the cloaca (butt) down to the end of the tail). The only poisonous snakes you will find there are water moccasins, copperheads, rattlesnakes, and the alabama coral snake (extremely rare, but deadly - rear fanged & hard for them to inject venom).
Most poisonous snakes will have dark skin with dull patterns, and will be thick in diameter. Just about any snake will try its best to get out of your way, but the moccasin is territorial & will stand its ground. I didn't mean to ramble, I just don't want anybody to get bitten. I hope this helps.

John, you did not release an aligator into the lake did you?

I look at alot of wakeboarding forums and boating forums and sometimes people will show pictures of aligators swimming by their pier.

I am not sure what would freak me out more a 4ft snake or a 4ft alligator swimming by.......

At least I know who to call if I have a question about snakes......

Oh and who has seen the movie "Snakes on a Plane"?????? almost slapstick funny,,,,,kids dont need to see the first half because of noodity but the rest was silly funny.

Even the trailers freaked me out. Since I'm in a plane almost everyday, I just figured I shouldn't watch that one.

Its is one of those movies that it is SOOO sarcastic that its not even concievable that it might happen.

I bet that I did say that I hate snakes 10 times during the movie though.

Steve, no gators released in the lake by me ( I only release crocs... the kind you wear - if anybody finds a red "Alabama" pair, they're mine). It wouldn't surprise me to find a gator there though. They usually don't survive the cold this far north, but the last couple of winters have been pretty mild... you never know.

Hey thanks for the info, I guess I will keep a ho or shovel near by to kill it ( for my husband to use) . Hopefully I won't see anymore. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for those crocs as well. Going to be up tomorrow, we've been itching to get back all week.

Congratulations again on buying a place on the lake.

we should be there without the kids and have not decided if we will be in the boat or the seadoos but we will definitely be wet somehow.

Be carefull out there and if you get down toward the dam look for a blue Supra or 1 blue 1 yellow seadoos.
