I didi dives on the old bridge last week and found fresh water jellies on two separate days.

Craspedicusta sowerbyi are marvelous creatures about the size of a quarter. They pulsate lazily as they feed on tiny bacteria and single cell stuff. Members of the phylum Cnidaria class Hydrozoa they have stinging cells but their tiny nematocysts are not long enough to puncture human skin.

They were way out around some old Christmas trees. A few years ago I remember a jellylike growth on pier and bridge pilings in the Kowaliga area. Haven seen this recently.

We own a home in the Sandy Creek Smith Mountain area and have had fresh water jellyfish in some areas for the past 2 years. They are to be found in more stagnant bodies of water but we find them to be in the deeper channel areas. The kids love them!

We saw them this past summer more than ever before. One of my dive partners actually got a picture of one.

They're absoutely beautiful and graceful creatures.
