I know marine engines are desinged to take higher RPMs than standard engines, but what should I expect (high end RPMs) to get out of a stock 454 before I place too much of a demand onthe engine? What is the effect of running 3800-4400 RPMs?

It has a rev limiter I hope. Do you have a clue as to what that is? If not ask Cat.

PP, If you have 330 hp 7.4s, or the 315hp 7.4ltr mpi engine, they should be operated under 4800rpms. Jim is correct, they will have rev. limiting devices that will keep you at or below recomended engine rpm range. However, never operate the engines at any length of time when they are "against" the rev limiter. Usually, fuel is removed to limit rpm, and this creates a lean condition, and will damage the engines. 4400rpm will never hurt them. If they are Mag engines, then the limit is set higher. Run em', they will be fine.
