New to your Forum. Long time at Lake Martin, though. (18 years)
I want to attract panfish/catfish to my dock for fishing both day and night. I plan to use lights and "tree-like" PVC structures.
Question?? Any APC/EPA rules against PVC as opposed to Christmas trees??
Appreciate any advice.

Mack,

Instead of using tree like PVC, I would recomment using real trees. I am not sure on Lake Martin but PVC is not allowed in many off shore habitats as they want either natural trees or cement. Christmas trees like the HOBO's used this year is probably the best possible panfish and thus BASS habitat possible and you can easily position it where you can still swim and boat near the dock , or move it at a later time if you choose to. I would suspect you could put trees in without issue but ADEM may need to be consulted.

Be careful though as the best tree lined docks get a reputation and are more often fished, but we dont take any panfish out and most release the bass unharmed to swim back to your structure.

Mack as Ron says, trees seem to be the thing for fish habitat. In fact APCo encourages the building of fish habitats. They have had a program for years of building habitats with discarded Christmas trees. I don't know about pvc or the lights. The lights work great shining on and in the water. I don't know if in the water is legal. We used to crappie fish at night with Coleman lanterns shining on the water. They really draw the bait fish.

A PVC structure has to be a little closer to legal than what I have seen out there. I've seen Christmas trees weighted with CAR BATTERIES as well as the occasional refrigerator or deep freezer. I've seen shopping carts, as well. People have no brains.

I've seen the PVC things and they look like they'd draw a ton of fish, not to mention, you'd probably wind up leaving less mono in the lake after snagging in those trees.

Good grief I'm ready to sit on the dock with a cold one and fish!

The thought of someone using a car battery send s shutters through me. I've seen the pvc used under the pierand out in front and it must work. The newest thing I've seen is the bamboo canes anchored in buckets of cement. With the batterys, refrigeraters, freezers people just don't have a clue. Then they get excited when they catch fish with sores.

I'm with you, fish and raise the cool ones.

Bream, crappie, perch are examples of pan fish.

lights work well on the pier or under water...the new under water light(green monster ...i think is the name works well if you have a way to get power to your pier.) pine tops xmas trees and cedar trees are great cover for fish....i grew up on the lake and every christmas the tree got drug to the lake and placed in the water...use cement blocks to anchor them....the bamboo in the five gallon bucket w/cement works well also..just becareful where you place you dont want anyone jumping in the water on top of them.....if i am not mistaken i read where you are not supposed to use pvc structure......canned dog food/ cat food attracts fish to your pier....punch holes in the cans and hang in water but make sure you are able to get the cans out of the water....i have seen pvc pipe with holes drilled t/o the pipe and the pipe filled with dog food/cat food...
