Been on the lake 18 years and caught a grand total of 2 Crappie. By accident, I think.
Help!
Minnows or Jigs? Troll or drift? Prefer daylight hours.
Thanks

You are on a very good lake or Crappie. Only a couple of things to remember:

1 - Timing - pre-spawning time (when they usually bite like crazy) on martin is usually sometime in May and Oct - got to catch the 2-3 week window right.

2 - location - Mostly piles of submerged trees - many people sink xmas trees which are excellent. If you have a dock, put the trees out.

3 - bait - jigs or minnows - I find jigs to be less hassle and cheaper.

4 - Jig technique (less important if you catch them pre-spawning) - reel slowly (keep changing til you find the right depth), or light jerking motion that makes jig dance.

You can catch them anytime, but they tend to be less aggressive and deeper when not feeding pre-spawn.

Best eating fish in the world is Martin Crappie. Good luck.

We have always used minnows on a small hook with a bamboo pole and bobber. Great success! (I have never been able to find a jig that worked as good, but I'm open to ideas). Put a small lead weight about 8-12 inches from the hook and minnow. Start at about 3-5 feet down above sunken trees and debris and move up or down depending on where you are getting hits. Once you find the zone, you will catch MANY Crappie.

there are many ways to catch crappie...... i use minnows and jigs(1/16oz...1/32...you can use larger sizes if you like) jig color is a day to day thing...i usually try to always use a chartruese but i have found white, yellow, red green black mix/red green yellow also works well...go to walmart and buy you a jig starter kit and try different colors and then you will become confident in certain color combos....road runner jigs also work well..

depends if your fishing from a boat / land..pier.....if fishing from a boat i like to vertical fish deep tops..once you find the depth the fish are biting you will be able to catch a lot of fish......fishing shallow water from boat i usually cast..... when fishing from the pier i use a cork rig for minnows and sometimes jigs.....this time of year when the water is not full pool i use the cork rig with the jig to keep from hanging up so much in return catching a lot of fish this way.....i use a 1/16 oz jig behind a cork(sometimes weighted cork depending on where i need to cast...i always keep some in the box)cast past the tops/ structure then bring across the structure with slow retrieve adding a twitch to your rod tip for more action to the jig....if this does not work go to what i call a stop and go retrieve....when you stop the jig will fall triggering strikes...try this out you should have good sucess....i am planning on fishing next weekend so yall go out fish this week and tell me if there biting....wet one!

Thanks to you all who posted to my message about Crappie. I'll be trying some of the suggestions all year long, as long as I can get the boat in the water.
How about some ideas about cookin' em, once you catch em'?

if you can create a habitat(cedars, xmas trees, pine tops, etc...) for the fish your pier will start holding all kinds of fish....you have to have some type of cover that attracts bait fish and that will bring the game fish.....its hard to beat shiners but if i can catch them on jigs i do.when fishing from a pier i usually have 2-3 poles rigged with minnows and then i cast a jig around to locate fish and up my chances of catch....
