Some fishermen have reported earlier that they were catching crappie 10'-15' over trees. I havent't tried this yet. I have been fishing from my pier ( which I know some can't yet ) and catching catfish and spotted bass using spottails and large shinners on the bottom. My neighbor caught a 35# stripper on a spottail. No luck on crappie from the pier yet.

Polar I'm not too knowedgeable on stripers. You can still spoon on the long rocky points. Just troll off the points untill you see the fish on your finder, then either use bucktail jig, live shiners, or hopskins spoons to lure the fish. The fish should be 20'-40' and near the river run. When you catch one and pull it up the ballist bag will be sticking out of its mouth except for the larger fish.

Thanks for the input, I've trolled around the bluffs by the dam with shiners at about 30 feet. Always catch several large mouth but no stripers.

Ever caught a snapping turtle??, Caught one last year off the dock with heavy catfish rig, hands down one of the best fights i've ever had in fresh water!

I've seen the " for hire " boats trolling around the island as you come out of the narrows coming down stream ( left to Blue Creek and right to the bridge or Chimney Rock ). I don't know if they caught any stripes but I caught plenty of cats there fishing float style.

Me and a group fish Martin a week every April (since 1972). Some are professional, some are total novices and all in between. For spring fishing I would say:

Stripers = deep water, large jigs, spoons on bottom - you really can catch some big ones, but we typically find them off rocky point (where current speeds up and brings food by), and off humps (not often near docks).

Spotted bass = easily spooked so stay quiet. Depends on where they are in spawning cycle. Pre-spawn they go into a frenzy so find the bait fish (off points & humps as they tend to lay their eggs on rocky or sandy surfaces). during/after spawn you will only catch the males (up to 2lbs) and they will take some work as they sit and fan the eggs with their tails and don't really eat per say, thought they will try and remove threats to the eggs (lizards especially) by picking them up with their mouths and dropping them. To a fisherman that means "strikes" are extremely sublte and you have to really set the hook. Just feels like your line is getting heavy. - not big fish anyway, but pound for pound very strong fighters.
