Does anyone know of a better way to tell the height that the water would need to be at to flood their lake spot other than a level string and a tape measure?

Your property should have a 50 yr flood plan marked somehow.

I dont think you will need a string but stand on your pier and figure 4-5ft tall and work back on your property until you run into land. A level lot will be harder to calculate.

Build a water level.

Any length of plastic clear tubing you have seen at Lowes or Home Depot. Fill with water and a tiny ammount of food coloring.

Be sure no air is left in the tube , leave both ends open. Set one end where you think the lake level may be at flood stage,, generally around 5 feet above full pool but has been 7 feet above full pool. The water in the tube will seek its own level and be true.

There ya go. Walk as far as the lenght of tubing you purchased will allow and check where the colored water in the level is on the property end

Don't most GPS units have elevation readings? If you know someone with one of the handheld type you can calibrate it by the water level then move to the location you need to check.
