I have a 40 hp Merc that is a 4 cylinder. It's a 98 model. Here's the problem: If you get it to idle good, it's hard to start and if you get it to start easy, it loads up a idle and dies. I've had a couple different mechanics go thru the carbs, but still have the same problem. ANY IDEAS???

I'm no mechanic....but you will learn, most boat mechanics are not either...lol. Give this a try. When you pump the bulb on the gas line to get gas to the motor, dont stop when it gets hard...grab the bulb with both hands and squeeze it hard for another pump or two...that usually gets a cold natured mercury to fire off....if it dont help...at least it didnt cost any money or time. Ha.....let me know if it works

...where the neurons, protons, photoplasms, cells, and beers are firing correctly and working in sync.

That is according to Nautiminded. Now how one acheives that rare form is a secret that only Nauti knows, and I don't think she is telling...lol.

If you are close to me I'll try to fix it for you. Seems like it would be a good challenge. I'll make a deal with you. Bring it to me and if you don't think I fixed it, don't pay me. I like a good challenge every now and then. I'll even do it tommarrow morning on my off day. Email me.

Darn!...where were you back in the days that I ran outboards?...everyone I went to did things a little different...I pay them lots of money to work on motor....I take it out and find that it is the same as before...I take it back and they tell me they will work on it again...but it needed all those new parts they installed...even though it still runs the same...lol

I appreciate the challenge, but I think I'm about a 5 or 6 hour drive from you. I'm about 30 minutes east of knoxville, Tenn. If your closer I may take that challenge.
