i'm having a hard time turning my motor. the wheel seems stiff. i dont see any place to oil the metal bars under the dash. and no place to oil the cables, The cables run back to the motor (merc blk max 135hp. i oil the two rods that the motor seems to move on. but no real change. does anyone have any ideas what may help? or is replacing the cables my only option? i did notice a nut with a spring on it under the dash. its connected to the streering. i loosen it and the it was easier to turn, but i'm cocern that if i turn to much the wheel my fall off.

Replace it. I had the same situation a few years ago and the steering wheel DID come off, at about 60-70mph. NOT a pleasant experience!!

I am not sure, but I would think that it may be different from model to model. Maybe CAT can give a better answer. Why don't you email him the specifics of your boat and motor and maybe he will know or can find out. All I can tell you is, IF it breaks, it can have DEADLY consequences.

take the 4 bolts that hold the rack in place on the steering head, drop the rack out of the way. turn the wheel. if it now turns easily, replace the cable assembly. if not, the helm unit is bad. the you might as well replace helm and cable...

Exactly what I would say.
