I have an opportunity to trade an old four wheeler of mine for a 17' boat with a Mercury Inline 6 cylinder 2 stroke 90hp outboard engine. Currently the engine does not have a spark but compression on all cylinders is good and when it was set up about a year ago it was running well. My question is would it even be a worth while trade if none of the cylinders are getting a spark my first guess is a coil but I hear that this could get costly quick. Does anyone know anything about the reliability of these mid 80's model 2 stroke inline 6's? Basically what I am asking is in general without knowing the history of the motor do these engines generally last a while or do they need to be rebuilt and such regularly? Thanks

Most of the mid 80s mercs are very dependable. The biggest problems were with the wireing harness and the stators.also if it is oil injected also had problems oil pump gear striping out after sitting for a period of 6 months or more.

Great thanks, that's what I needed to know. It is not oil injected, oil is premixed into the gas. I think I am going to go pick it up tomorrow. Hopefully it will turn out well. I will check the wiring harness and other things when I pick it up. Thanks for your help.
