40 horese merc

I read over the week-end and find it hard to believe. It states that a 1998 40 and 50 horse merc have the same power head and that by putting on 50 horse carbs you would make turn the 40 into a 50 horse. The RPM's and gear ratio are the same. Any truth to this? If so wouldn't this be a cheap upgrade? Would it help or hute the fuel economy ? It's on a 22 ft pontoon. Also what prop would help? The economy and performce is that great. I forgot, the motor is a four cylinder, 40 horse Merc Tracker.
