Just got in from night fishing. Fished in Sandy Creek. 2 dozen keepers. I fished in 25' to 30'. Fish were holding anywhere from 15' to the bottom. Used minnows.

Since they are now deep, will you share some information on how to find them deep??
Night and daylight hours?? Trolling/Drifting/Minnows/Jigs, anything that would help some of us weekenders have some of the fun of catching a few??

I am a weekender as well. I started to get into the Crappie fishing last summer. I have been lucky enough to find a spot that always holds Crappie. The first thing you will need is a fishfinder. If you are not using one you are wasting your time. A halfway decent one too. A $200-400 one will do. You need too be able to mark fish and wodden structure on the bottom. You will just have to find water in the 30' range has sunken trees or some type of wood.

I also fish near a wooden dock that has a dock light on it. The dock is in 15' feet of water. There are always plenty of bream and crappie cruising through the light at night. The previous owner of the house also dumped trees to create habitat. I am never that successful fishing right near the light. I back off the light anywhere from 15' to 40' and have more success that way. The crappie seem to hangout on the edge of the light. I always catch them deep (15'-30') from May through the summer. Even if I float a minnow under the light the crappie just don't bite. I think they can see the line in the light.

Use 4lb test line. Use flourocarbon line which is completely invisible in the water. Or use moss green P-line monofilament which is also invisible in the water. I have read that crappie are very line shy and they

I use a #2 hook and two large spit shots. The spit shots are about 2'-3' above the hook. I am going to experiment with different rig setups because if I don't get a bite in about 10 minutes the minnow tangles everything up.

Use minnows. I don't bother with artificials. I am a firm believer that all fish prefer there natural bait. You could jig a grub or other bait while you are trolling around looking for fish.

I fish at night. I can't do it during the day because I am too busy with the kids.

Good post Pontoon fisherman. Dead on. I do use one split shot to let the minnow sink a little slower. (Course this is dependent on the size of the split shot.) I have used a medium size (a little larger than a BB).

Another pontoon fisherman.

I pounded the Real Island area last weekend, and if it hadn't been for a school of White Bass, it would have been a very bad trip. I couldn't find active Bass anywhere, and the wind kept me and my jonboat off of many of my best spots.
As for fishing the Crappie lights, I also do best fishing away from the bright center. While I see plenty of fish in the center, they just don't want to bite there The best lights are the ones in deep water or close to it, like on a point near the main lake. I personally don't like to fish lights with lots of brush around them. I lose too many lures, which means re rigging by flashlight, and I have enough trouble tying knots in the daytime while wearing my contact lenses. The lights with little or no brush, or just brush under the pier, seem to produce better for me anyway. The resident fish may relate to the brush, but I think that the fish that are drawn to the light from elsewhere are not looking to relate to any cover while they chase down the baitfish.

If we could get together, I would be glad to pick you up and show you how you "should" be able to catch some bass this time of year. That, depending on when I'm at the lake and when my wife decides to stay at the pool. We might be able to find some of the "non-existent" stumps (that don't exist according to LTL) out on some points.

What area of the lake are you? I'm in the Still waters area. I should be there some this weekend. Have a green Sylvan with 150 Honda pontoon and bike seat on the front. I will be around the south to middle end of lake cruising if you want to give me directions, or we can e-mail.
