Cat:

This whole ethenal gas has me baffled to say the least. As I recently heard all the major oil company's are now producing gas with ethanol (for Alabama distribution) do not know if it is true or not. I know Texaco and Exxon do as they have signs on their pumps. But not Chevron or BP, so do not know if they have blended fuels or not, but am going to ask next time i fill up the car..

My question is in the Mastercraft 350 chevy and the pontoon Volvo I/O 135 and the Sea Doos (2 stroke) then the 40HP 2 stroke outboard I have always run 93 octane, feel safer than sorry (just my opinion).

But this whole ethanol stuff has me concerned, any issue with ethanol and if so any safeguards to combat this whole ethanol and water mixture issue or just using ethanol in marine engines to begin with?? Or any other suggestions would be appreciated not only by myself, but most folks I would think. As I really want to safeguard against any and all potential ethanol issues.

MAV, I have typed this info several times in emails, etc. Sorry, a short version for now. Ethanol produces less energy than gasoline, and results in less fuel economy as well. I believe, and have read that a gallon of gasoline with 15% ethanol mixed/blended will result in a leaner burn and produce more cylinder temp. and pressure. Many suppliers are blending 15% ethanol with the gasoline. we are seeing more exhaust valve/seat failures now, and I believe this is why. As a safegaurd, we are reducing ignition timing by a couple of degrees, as well as creating richer fuel mixtures to combat this problem. So far, it seems to work ok for now, but the engine produces a little less power. Most of the EFI systems seem to more or less "Take care of themselves". Hope this helps, if not, you need to call me on the phone. LOL, now I'm going to bed.

Thanks Steve. Much appreciated.

Follow up questions what about.

Running 93 Octane and then adding one of the following additives as I have been doing some research since I posted the above question.

K100 - http://www.k100online.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=K100MG&Store_Code=KFTO

MARINE Formula STA-BIL® Ethanol Treatment and Performance Improver - http://www.goldeagle.com/sta-bil/stabil_marine.htm

Sea Foam - http://www.seafoamsales.com/motorTuneUpConsumer.htm.

Wonder if the marinas around the lake are now storing ethanol blended gas.

Guess I need to call around Alex City and find a local mom and pop station who's jobber is not delivering ethanol blended gas yet. But really wonder if the station would have any clue as to what is being delivered to them, that is the scary part.

There is really no real big issue, unless you don't use your boat much and store it with fuel (Ethanol is more corrosive), Or your boat/Marine engine is a high performance engine.
