Just arrived at the house. I am about to crack my 4th Bud Light. Got three chickens (they will be having a beer crammed up there business end) and some Bubba Burgers ready for the grill this weekend. The Green Monster Light is alive with fish. Crappie, bream, shad (big too 6-8"), bass (3 pounder swimming around) and catfish. No Stripers. I will be doing some night crappie fishing this weekend. I will provide updates.

Hey toon what type of minnow do you use to catch the crappie?? The one at the bait shop dont look like the little silver one by the light. And they dont seem to like the Tuffies.

I have had my Green Monster lights for about 2 weeks now. Sunday night we had a hungry striper of about 10# start feeding on the minnows right in front of our faces. Man, it was awesome the way it snuck up on them. He would hide under the floating dock and suddenly bust through the school.

My lights are about 12 feet deep in 18 feet of water and i have had much larger stripes circuling the lights but the above was the first time amyu of them have come to the surface.

I think it is actaully some king of shiner. I get them at Siggers (was Jay's Junction and before that it was Siggers) in Dadeville/Jacksons Gap. I have never had any luck with the Crappie biting these near the light. I think they can see the fishing line and/or hook. I know the bream can see it because they nip at the fishing line thinking it's soemthing to eat. Try backing off the light 10 to 15 feet and fishing the dark area around the light.

You must be closer to the main part of the lake in deeper water?? I am in Sandy Creek by the Smith Mountain fire tower and I did not see a single striper this weekend in the light. I think they have moved out of my area. I also don't see any more shad around the light. A month ago there where thousands of shad circling the light.

we are in the Reel Island area. I caught a nice stripe off my pier two winters ago and was able to find them around one of the main points in Trillium, but have not seen them since, until we installed the lights.

In the past two weekends my daughter and I have caught about thirty bass and crappie off of my dock and the majority on the fishing light across from my dock. We caught a fish on almost every third cast. Largest bass was around 2lbs and all the crappie were very nice sized. I personally like more of a challenge but the lights are awesome for looks and a bunch of fish quickly.

Did you know Lake Martin has flying fish?

Out on pier with neighbor about 2 weeks ago looking at fish around lights and all of a sudden a striper breaks the surface after a spot tail and I promise you over a 25 to 30 foot span the striper did not touch the water. or if he did he was barely touching it Then for the funny part - the spot ran right past a 6x6 dock support post and the striper did not see it hit it head on with a very loud THUG. We both were laughing so hard then we walked over to see if the striper was dead or unconscious and he was gone.

Neighbor has been on lake for over 40 years and said he had never witnessed anything like that in his life and is a avid fisherman. Lets just say he was in awe.

We now have come to the conclusion these lights draw some real strange fish species unnatural to Lake Martin, after several adult cocktails:

Flying Fish
Flounders - 3 lb Crappie
Sharks - 7 or so pound Cats
Whales - Have to be large Stripers the best we can tell as they swim by the light and the entire light is blacked out. and the Tail spam is out 6 inches or so. But definitely not a Cat, could be a carp but hard to tell.

Lets just say I hope you are enjoying your lights as much as my neighbor and I are. Makes for some great cocktail conversations. Plus the kids are having a blast catching all sorts of fish.

Mav,

After the trauma of getting Ronnie to finally instal the lights we have had a ball. I think we have seen everything you noted except our spottail ended up on the floating dock and persihed. No one was there to witness, but one must assume it was being chased by a big fish. Not sure which fate is worse cause he was hard as a carp when we found him.

Had not thought about flounders, but that is a great description. Never knew fish routinely swam sideways and upside down until I got the light.
