Has anyone seen the Marine Police. First weekend I have been able to get the pontoon out. We were going into Clear Creek , just before the bridge a guy on a PWC going about 70mph was on the loose. Not that bad except he was towing a young teen on a tube. He made a large circle to get on my 6. He came across my 6 to catch my wake. He was flying. I am not exaggerating 70 plus. When the tube came across my wake the boy was catapulted 10 ft in the air,hit the water like a skimming rock and then started barrel rolling. This was at least 50ft this went on. I stopped thinking this fool has just injured this boy bad. Anyway he popped up to the surface and was picked up by the Sea Doo. I got the tag number to give to the Marine Police. I have not seen the Police yet. I have been fishing a couple of times and have not seen any. Are they working Logan Martin. By now they have usually checked my fishing boat for fire extinguisher and floating throw device.

I've seen them several times over the last 3 weekends. I also saw an unmarked Game Warden patrolling the waters on Memorial Day. I wouldn't have known he was a Game Warden if he hadn't docked in our slough to visit a neighbor of mine. There's a lot of water for them to cover, and only a few of them to do it. Now, that you mention it, I haven't been pulled over for a "check" this year either. Be safe.

I heard that Memorial day weekend there was supposed to be a huge presence of water popo at Lake Martin to curb underage drinking.......

We were at the cliffs Sunday of memorial and saw the regular patrol cruise through..... We also saw the game warden down near the dam a couple of times,....... Their HQ is just down from my house and I am sure you can call but I am not sure about a law for stupidity. unless they are drinking I am not sure there is much they can do .........

I've seen them almost every weekend here around the bridge. I also saw the unmarked boat Memorial Day weekend. Like Steve said, there is only one or two officers and this is a big lake. And I too appreciate their efforts. Maybe the LMLPA could get us some contact information for them or we could load a number in our phones so when we see something like the Sea Doo thing, we could notify them? Neighborhood watch kind of thing?

When I had the gas stealing incident, the Sherrif's office said there wasn't a Marine Police officer on the water at the time, Friday afternoon. But I don't have their number myself.

I have their phone number stored in my cell phone for just such occasions. 800 499 1667. For emergencies call 911. There are two MP's patroling Logan Martin. I think Don still patrols the lower lake and Kim patrols the upper lake. Of course, either can pull you over anywhere on the lake.

The wildlife guys have the same powers as the marine police regarding boating law enforcement. They can and do pull people over for boating law violations (much to some people’s surprise).

The Lake Martin forum has a member (alias "Marine Police") that will answer questions regarding boating law. Wish we could get one of our MP's on here.

Thanks. Now I have their number.

911 doesn;t always work with a cell phone. Never know which office you might get but it's better than nothing. And they can transfer you pretty quick too.

The Marine Police Headquarters for Logan Martin is, however most of the time the post is unmanned. We have been told on Martin that if there is a serious matter to call either the local Sheriff's Office or the State Troopers Office and they will contact the Marine Police directly and I have all these telephone numbers in my cell phone Under Lake - Marine Police, Lake _ Sheriff, Lake - State Troopers, Lake - Alex City Police. So you might want to contact the local headquarters below (leave voice mail if not there) and ask them who to contact in an emergency situation if their office is unmanned.

DISTRICT II HEADQUARTERS
1830 Constellation Avenue
Alpine, AL 35014

With regards to the Game Warden on Alabama waterways (per the Lake Martin Marine Police) they only have the authority to issue Fish and Game violations and cannot issue boating matter tickets. Except for when they are being accompanied by a Marine Police Officer during high exposure weekends and increased enforcement weekends such as about 3 weeks ago at Martin, but Game Warden.

Does St. Clair Co. have someone on the water?? On Lay Shelby Co. has an officer during the active boating months. The state is there pretty much year round I think. If gas gets much higher I heard that Shelby was pulling their guy off the water. What a shame.

I had originally read about wildlife conservation officers having full police powers statewide on the ADCNR website outdooralabama.com. I can't find the link for where I read it originally but did find this
(from Outdoor Alabama)

Conservation Enforcement Officers are state peace officers with full police powers statewide. Chief Enforcement Officer Allan Andress said, “Since the vast majority of people that our officers deal with on a day to day basis are peaceable, law abiding citizens, it is easy to become complacent about officer safety. It is events such as this that remind us of just how dangerous a Conservation Officer’s job really is.”

I've posted a link to an article from the Bham News that goes in to a little bit more detail.

If my information is incorrect I apologize.

I was pulled over last year by the wildlife guys. I didn't realize who they were until they were almost on top of me 'cause they looked like bass fishermen. When they got closer I saw the uniforms. They pulled me over because I was pulling some kids on a tube and didn't have an observer. Ummmm...gee guys....can't you see my HUGE legal sized mirror? They asked me if I had a boaters license and I told them yes. And they took my word for it. I started to tell them they should ask to SEE it - not just take my word for it...but decided to leave well enough alone.

In my five years on the lake, I have overall been disapointed in the Marine police. It appears to me, at least on the upper end of the lake, Kim is primarily concerned with BUI's. Almost to the point of making it a crusade. There is much more to her job and this should be pointed out to her.
What about navigation? Every year, on this end of the lake, new snags appear. Some very near the main channel. Yet few if any are marked and I dont see the marine police making any effort to remove them. One would think, during the winter months, the marine police would make an effort to do something about navigation safety.

So what you are saying is that you know how to do the job better than they do? I don't see how anyone could complain about an officer's efforts to stop people from boating drunk. Then again, it's your right to be disappointed.

Not a complaint so much as an observation. It appears to me, at least on our end of the lake, BUI'S are concentrated on at the expense of all else. Like I said, there is or should be more to the job than concentrating on BUI's. (Which are admittedly a very important part of the job).

As to marking and or removing dangers to navigation, yes, I am saying I could do a better job! It wouldnt take much since nothing at all is now being done towards this very important aspect of boater and public safety on our end of the lake.

Just spoke with a Lake Martin Officer and the Game Warden does have the authority to ticket for unsafe boating, etc.

Sorry for the incorrect info.
