Just noticed that the Great Blue Herons that were on an island down river have abandoned it and moved to one just off our point. Any idea what causes them to move? They sure create a racket at sunset--sort of like the old "clackers" we played with in the early 70s--what genius came up with that idea? Giving kids two very hard plastic balls on the end of a piece of nylon rope???
Anyway, I noticed several nests on the island...

We have a couple of those that hang around our place. My dog, which is getting pretty old just barked at it from the back deck, when she figured it wasent leaving she walked all the way down to the water to run it off. I remember the clacker things too, them things could hurt if they slipped out of your hand, dont ask me how I know.

If you think about it, most of the toys we played with were dangerous, compared to today's toys. How we ever made it to adulthood is beyond me.
Back to herons--my golden and lab will run off the herons, but only to impress me if I happen to be outside, otherwise, they just ignore them. The herons remind me of some prehistoric creature--sound like one too. We watched one swallow a catfish that weighed about 1/2 pound the other day--the heron threw the catfish way up on the back and pecked at the fish until it stopped squirming, then the heron swallowed it in about 10 seconds, hopped down in the water and started fishing again.
If I didn't have to work, I could really put in some serious "creature-watching" time.....
Life on Logan Martin is so wonderful--never a shortage of awesome sunrises and sunsets over the water, plenty of "two-legged wildlife", etc. Of course now the water is starting to get that warm feel to it and scum is starting to form up in our slough. We need rain....

Blondie, what part of the lake are you on?

We were headed over to Pier 59 Saturday night and passed a clsuter of trees that had at least a dozen hanging out as we passed.

Just north of the Civic Center. The other island that they used to inhabit was near the "Big Slide" (on the west side of the point off Funderburg). I don't know if their "fertilizer" killed the trees or what, but for a while the trees looked really bad, but when we were over there the other day, the island looked like it was coming back to life since the herons were gone.
We have a problem with the geese now. Our neighbor put out a decoy a couple of years ago and attracted about 50 or so that just decided to stay--they never leave! They are messy---huge crap and the dogs just love to roll in it!
