I have a 115 evinrude on my 24' toon, it just doesn't seem to be running fast enough and it doesn't sound like it is opening up to full throttle. other than that it runs great sounds great just not as fast as i think it should be.........any suggestions

Do you have a tach? What are the top end RPMs.

there is one on the boat but not hooked up, I'm far from a mechanic

check and see if there is a lot of crap growing on you pontoons. if there is it can cause the boat to loose half of its speed. Might also keep the motor from running at full rpm's if it was propped correctly to start with.

if the pontoons are clean, and you halfass know what you are doing, you can check and see if the throttle is pushing the mechanism to the stops. if not there is an adjustment that will permit you to make it do this.

on the otherhand, you could have electrical problems and not be firing on all cylinders,

OR A BAD CARB. IF THIS IS THE CASE AND YOU CONTINUE TO RUN, AND YOUR OUTBOARD IS A TWO STROKE, YOU COULD WRECK THE POWER HEAD.

IF YOU ARE CLUELESS YOU SHOULD TAKE IT TO CAT BEFORE YOU DO SERIOUS DAMAGE

Agree with KA's first suggestion. Power wash your pontoons. My boat was in the water for two years and had slowed down feeling like the engine had lost power. Had the pontoons power washed and it runs like new now. I now keep it on a lift to keep the scum off the pontoons.

pontoons are clean - the arm goes all the way to the stops - put in new plugs and they are all firing - like i said it runs great just doesn't sound like it's opening up - how fast should a 115 push a 24' pontoon? - what is involved in hooking up the tach? thanks for all the help

in order to determine how fast your boat should go you need to know the pitch and diameter of the prop. but that calc is just theoretical and slip on a pontoon boat is probably serious. it probably should run between 25 and 30 mph

the tach is easy to hook up if you have a wireing diagram for you controls. there are usually several wires that come to the controls through the harness that are not connected to anything. one of those is the feed for the tach. that and a ground is all you need. there is usually a light wire on the tach also so you may need to determine which is which.

Is the 115 the motor that was originally installed on the boat?

if not then that might explain why the tach is not hooked up. all tachs will not work with all motors, and some you have to flip dip switches to set for the right number of cylinders.

if you have a two stoke engine and carburator problems you are asking for trouble by continuing to run it.

how do you know all plugs are firing? if they are try this if you can.

take the cover off the motor, run the boat a wot. using a pair of very insulated pliers, remove one plug wire from the plug. if the speed changes put the wire back on. if it doesn't change that cylinder is producing no power.

do the same with each cylinder. if the motor slows down each time you remove a wire, then all cylinders are producing.

you have to watch when you are doing this because you can shock the pisss out of yourself or fall off the boat.

you could have something like an obstructed fule line or dirty filter or pick-up.

I once had an outboard that would run fine and then slow down. after hours of looking for the problem, i found that someone had put the wrong kind of fule line in the motor. after it got warm, the suction through it would cause it to colapse.

when that happened it was fule starved and slowed down, i replaced the 2 inches of hose and that solved the problem.

the motor did not come on the boat I took it off another boat and put it on the pontoon. I knew I had extra parts for something. did that thing with the plugs and they all are firing and yes you can get quiet a charge next time i will wear depends.
everyone says it's in my head but if i think it then it's so. We are going to try and hook up the tach somehow this week to verify the RPM's. the power trim doesn't work and i think that my have something to do with it. Like I said it runs great it just doesn't have the high rpm noise that I am used to. Also this is my first pontoon and I really don't have anything to compare it to. any more suggestions let me know..........will keep you posted

improper trim could sure cause the problem. also if the motor is proped for say a bass boat and you put it on a pontoon with the same prop, you will have a problem.

they make special props for pontoon boats blades are shapped differently.

i would fix the trim, and check the prop.

don't forget that the tach might need to have switches set if you have a different number of cylinders on the new motor

I have a 22.5' tri-toon with a 115 Yamaha. Engine was purchased new with the boat. At 5,000 RPM's and trimmed it will do about 25 MPH. Hope that gives you a point of reference.

I bet that is going to be the problem. I wonder if the Marina stocks those props? Would I have to take mine with me for them to get the right size?
