What are typical causes for a depth gauge to quit working?

if it does not come on, no power caused by bad switch, blown fuse or broken or disconnected wire.
if it comes on and does not show depth, then either the tranducer has hit something and is no longer facing down, or the cable connecting the transducer is no longer connecting the transucer to the display unit. a major cause of this if you let your boat in the water is muskrats. they love to chew transduce cables.

If it is powered up but not giving a depth it could be a build up of deposits from sitting in the water. Try cleaning the sensor.

My depth gauge is working fine but the warning beeper has gone haywire. It has a shallow alarm and a deep alarm and they beep at will. I have reset the depths that should trigger the alarm numerous times but it doesn't change anything. I really don't even card to have the alarm because I keep a close watch on the depths any way. Can the beeper be disconnected without effecting the gauge?

My sensor is located on the rear of the passenger side pontoon. It is part of a Garmin GPS system. The sensor also reads water temp. While the water temp has never stopped working, the depth guage stops when it gets gunked up. Cleaning it with a soft plastic brush would only temporarily fix it. It works fine since I had the boat pulled from the water and the pontoons power washed.

To all you Captains, I belive it is called a Transducer, not a sensor. And y`all wonder about all the problems with other boaters on the lake.

also read my message I called it a transducer, typed it wrong on at least one occasion, but you should be comfortable with that.
and guess what, if it also takes water temp it is a sensor, so you can KIZMA ANUICE.

Knowing the ins and outs of each and every peice of equipment is not necassary to be a good and safe boater jim. I would bet that you are profiecient at using the remote to your TV, or maybe not, but most likely couldn't find it's reciever, much less know how it works.
Just like on savelakemartin today, all you have done is shown your own stupidity.
