Anybody here tried the MagicJack yet? Its a phone service you connect to your Internet Connection (VOIP) that cost only $19.95 per YEAR (yes Year) and its UNLIMITED EVERYTHING including long distance. Best part is you can actually take it on the road with you and pull up to a wireless connection with your laptop and a standard phone and call or recieve calls (yeah, kinda geeky using a house phone in your car huh?) (should I delete that line?). It comes with voice-mail, caller ID etc... Going to take it to our coffee club tomorrow morning and show the guys while attaching to the restuarant wireless.
I have been paying $30 a month for Vonage but I get the same with MagicJack for $19.95 per year. Check it out at www.magicjack.com

I have had one and it works as advertised. The negative thing is the phone number you get is not a local area code so when friends call it's long distance. For making calls it works great as long as you have it hooked to your computer online.

The downside is it doesn't receive calls from anything but other Majicjack phones. I have one and use it at times, but it is not the 'end all' in phones.

I can receive calls from anyone. I call my wife at home (magicjack) from my cellphone (tmobile)... Right its not the "end all" but if you can save over $300 a year its a good start.
I still have my Vonage for 1 more month making sure that my magicjack is going to work so I have both connected and they are working well.
Yes, I agree the downside is no local area codes but, in about 2 more years it wont matter, everyone will be using cell phones or VOIP to make calls.
My point was just to let everyone know what a savings they could have if interested.

Why use Magicjack when Skype is free! I talk to my father in law in Mexico and have a video chat for free.

I ahve heard others say they can recieve calls on theirs, but mine won't. It goes straight voicemail and if you watch the new infomercials they say, in a round about way, that it only recieves from other majicjacks. I had hoped mine would recieve when I bought it.

No. You must purchase Skype credit to call other phones. Calls to computers are free.

I have MagicJack and it works great. I called my daughter and had her call me back ( she doesn't have it ) and it worked great. I think Roswelleric was the first to introduce it to the forum. Any way I'm keeping a land line at the basic price in case of emergencies when the cable is down or power is off. I get incoming calls on the landline and use MJ for long distance. You need a regular phone for power failures. The screwed up telephone number is another drawback but I'll get used to that. When I get a good cell phone I'll let the landline go.

I thought so to Ric, but have tried a couple of different things with the same results. But even the website says it only recieves MJ to MJ. I didn't see that till after I bought mine. If anything I think it is my firewall and/or popup blocker. I keep my security settings high though. Too many folks don't like opinionated folks and will try to do harm. I really got a kick out of kizma trying to convince me he had hacked my puter when I was out of town at the time and the entire system was powered off....lol. But I have been hacked once years ago, that is why I keep my settings high.

fyi I just got vonage for my home phone. Works fine. Set up in 3 minutes. it is like 14.95 a month, I think a good balance from the old ma bell and totally geeky stuff like skype. I just wanted something in case of an emergency that my kids (<= 5 yrs old) can pick up and call 911 with, whereas they might not be able to work a cell phone in an emergency.

Probably a intro offer. My Vonage runs like $29.95 every month. I am trading it in for The Magic Jack...I do like the fact that Vonage has it where if someone leaves me a message it text my cell phone with number they called from and I know to either call in and check voicemail or just return the call from number texted to me..

Vonage has two residential plans where the $14.99/month plan is:
500 minutes of local and long distance calling anywhere in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico. Only 3.9¢ per minute after the first 500 monthly minutes.
The $24.99/month is unlimited minutes and, if you were to need it, calls to some European countries are free. Calls to Buenos Aires, China, Australia and Mexico are cheap ($.01 per minute) on the unlimited plan. Which accounts for some business needs.
I guess I'm impressed with the country service because just a couple of years ago I would frequently make cell phone calls to Buenos Aires that cost $.45 a minute on AT&T. I'm glad I was not paying the bill (company was).
I see that MagicJack has the capability to forward to your cell phone. Can't you forward to any phone? Another question is when you setup the forwarding, does the MajicJack ring at the same time?
Vonage has what they call SimulRing where you can have it ring up to 5 phones in addition to the Vonage phone itself. I just leave mine forwarded to my cell phone and lake cabin phone all the time. When visiting my Mother's house I add her phone to the list also.

I guess I should mention that there are taxes added to the Vonage plans cost. Would also think it applies to MagicJack also... Not sure... However there aren't as many taxes as you would pay for the switched phone service. I just know that with AT&T my $25.00 service totaled to $42.09 after taxes and fees. With Vonage the $24.99 service totaled $30.39 after taxes and fees. I don't think the Federal Subscriber Line fee applies to the Internet systems so that makes it cheaper. 911 applies with vonage and that is included.
One thing I've noticed (and kinda like) with Vonage is the 1+ is not required before long distance numbers just like cell phones always have been.

You can forward MagicJack to any phone...
MagicJack dials the same as Vonage area code & #...
As far as Faxing, with Vonage I know it works but, I havent done it with MJ but, there should be no difference. Its the same Internet I was faxing with Vonage.
For a star up of $46.00 its worth a try with MJ...

The vonage box has a second phone port for a 2nd line. A second line (and number) on the same box is an additional $5.00 per month. As for the capability, fax works like a normal phone because it transmits audible signals to be converted to data by the fax machine (like dial-up modems).
While we are talking about saving money and faxing, if you don't have more than three pages, three faxes per day and don't mind the recipient seeing a cover page advertisement, there is a free fax service online that transmits PDF and DOC files you upload. You can see that at www.FaxZero.com. They have a paid service too for more capability.

Please post your thoughts once you get it connected. Be patient when you plug it in.. Just sit back for about 2 - 3 minutes. It will have to load and then it will ask you a few questions. Type your name as you would want it to show up on Caller ID.

no I was not able to port my old number. VOnage said because I was in a rural area they couldn't.
14.95 a month is for ike 500 minutes, I don't think it's promotional.
I figure I only need 500 min on my home phone because we use our cell phones mostly

Works great. Some problems when attached to a wireless laptop ... but perfect when attached through a wired internet connection. Thanks for the recommendation. Definitely worth the money.

Faxes can be sent from electronic gadgets, regularly alluded to as online faxing which permits faxes to be sent and got without the requirement for a physical fax machine. Now you can send a fax via cocofax.
