Subject:   Lower unit question

Our boat has a '98 Volvo Penta 220 HP engine. Yesterday while cruising at ~ 20 mph the engine quit and would not crank requiring a tow back to the dock. We have been told that the lower unit needs to be replaced. I am obviously not a mechanic but thought the engine should at least idle with a bad lower unit. (We were assuming a fuel line issue.)
Any advice or recommendations of a good mechanic...CAT.....someone?

did it sound like you were running out of gas or was it a sudden stop, like the engine locked up?

Unfortunately I was not there when it happened. My wife said it shut down like when a rope or weeds bind the prop. They were in ~25 ft of water. She checked the props and found them free to rotate and without damage. When she tried to crank, it sounded like it was seized up. The marina showed her the lower unit fluid with metal shavings in it and stated a new lower unit needed to be ordered. The fluids were changed last Spring) I cannot get to it until mid week but thought I might get more edumacated from discussing with the forum ;>)
CAT......do you do house calls for diagnosis purposes?

I got your email, and responded. Sorry, I have been out of town on a boat purchase deal. Really, it is not unusual to have a small amount of shavings/dust on your drain plug. It is magnetic, and suppose to attract small fragments from wear and tear. I would be willing to run up there and look, but we are getting several boats ready for Emerald Coast Poker Run. If you will consider bringing it to my shop on Thursday, I'll give you a good idea of what is wrong. Let me know. Also, thanks for the kind words Kizma. I hope you are still running strong.
