The scroll on the weather channel said strong winds 60 - 70 mph frequent lightning, golf ball size hail. 2 hrs earlier i had seen a houseboat on a leisurely cruise, music on the front deck Momma dancing in her chair, Dad on the top deck, serving as Captain lil ones running around taking in the sights. As I watched the trees start to bend over, and the waves reach white cap levels i knew it was going to be a big storm, All the boats seemed to have found there way off the lake. The waves I noticed, were getting even bigger, they went from white caps, to almost 1.5' waves in about 20 minutes time. Then I noticed the house boat that I'd seen earlier headed toward the dam with the wind at its back. My thought was, He's running out of river to run from the storm on. By this time the wind was at its peak and the rain had my visibility down to about 100'. The house boat had vanished in the storm, and my curiousity about the conditions on the boat were as piqued as the weather. Then as I watched, the houseboats lights, reappeared, dim in the blinding rain, coming back up river with waves crashing on her bow, I was relieved to see they had made the turn and still under power. I later went out for a ride and spoke to the fearless(or fearful ) Capt floating around in calm water hardly a puff of a breeze blowing, The music was playing, the same beat I had heard a few hours earlier and the weekend was continuing aboard the ( insert name here ).

I heard what I'm going to say was Mom, from about 100'. Talking in a high pitch voice, I can only magine it was the "tale of the storm"

I think you're a great writer. Made me think I was actually here and I wish I was. My son was at the lake and said it was a great storm. I love thunderstorms at the lake on a late summer evening. Not as bad as this one seemed to be but a thunderstorm at the lake is a neat thing to watch and experience. I'm thankful no one was hurt and the damage was minimal.

Thanks for the great story. I vote for more.

Peace,

My son was camping at Cheaha and said he'd never been so scared in his life. They were camping on the peak near Bald Rock when the storm hit and they had to high tail it to a nearby cave. He said you've never heard 4 guys screaming like little girly girls. He also said the lightning strikes and subsequent boom were almost simultaneous. I'd have been screaming like a girly girl, too.

I'm glad I only heard about it after the fact...sort of like hearing that my daughter had already jumped off the highest point of Chimney Rock. I found that out when she went to do it again and I was saying no WAY- Gee, Mom, I've done it before!
Sometimes it pays to be oblivious.

Wondered what knid of replies this would get. There are rarely unique events on the lake to write about. However this one was noteworthy for sure.At least from where I was standing.
