I live in Pell Cty and work on Lake Martin in the summer. Last winter, after seeing the abismal level of historical knowledge our kids exhibit, I decided to take an American history course at our new Jr College. What an eye opener! The Prof walks in and says that he was teaching this class from a Marxist perspective! I asked what Marxistism has ever produced but poverty, oppression and mass murder. It went down hill from there.
Later he had a film he wished to show us an an example of bad history. It was on weather Hitler was a homosexual. It was 5% histort and 95% advocating the homosexual lifestyle! It was XXX rated. I told him that 20 yrs ago he would have been fired and arrested for showing such a phorno flick! This is what goes on our schools!
Students can't stand up to these quislings but we can. Retired people can take coarses under the continutng education program for little cost. Take one . See how we are subdising the teaching of our own destruction. When you find these write letters to your legislatures, newspapers school boards etc. Turn over the rock and watch the roaches scurry away

What's equally disturbing is that our teachers primary function is to be able to communicate with the students. Our colleges have many professors who can't speak English. The students leave the classroom asking each other if they could understand what the teacher said and many try to switch classes but the college must fill the classrooms and tell the students they should adjust.

And now you know how/why the great O has become the annointed chosen one. This country doesn't have schools any longer. It is filled with government indoctrination centers that parents willingly send their children too daily.

The younger people cannot learn from history if their education is so restricted or skewed that they do not know the truths. Forget the past, this country had no history of consequence prior to the 60's. All hail BO.

Your rant against the educational system would be more effective if you didn't write as if you hadn't set foot in a school since fourth grade. "Abismal," "weather," "coarses" and "subdising" aren't just typos; they are examples of not knowing how to spell ("abismal" and "subdising"), and not knowing which form of a word to use ("weather" instead of the proper "whether," "coarses" instead of "courses".)
Not that you didn't have your share of typos, too, but that happens; I'm sure you knew better than to intentionally type "histort," "phorno," and "continutng."
People can blame politicians all they want (including, it seems, politicians who have yet to be elected) but the real problem can be found by looking in the mirror. When teachers pass students who clearly have not learned the material, when parents allow their children to be under-educated, and when the students themselves are perfectly happy with not being able to communicate the written language in an age-appropriate manner, then it's not the fault of the politicians; it's the fault of the teachers, the parents and the students.
Yes, programs such as "No Child Left Behind" are rooted in politics, but that is because the teachers, parents and students ALL failed to such a degree that such measures are needed. (And of course the biggest irony of all is that NCLB has itself turned out to be such a failure.)
If you want people to take your rant seriously, communicate it like an educated adult; otherwise we can only think "this person obviously has no experience with more than rudimentary education, so why should we take anything he says about higher education seriously?"
A written language is such an incredible thing; when did people stop putting any value on it? It can say so much about who you are... and, sometimes, who you are not.

I enjoyed his 'rant'. Maybe because I agree with his veiwpoint. Now your 'rant' carries less wieght with me. Not because I don't agree with you, because for the most part I do, but because I don't think his post was deserving of being criticed for grammatical and spelling content. His point was made. He never claimed to belong in academia, just an 'old diver' interested in history. Since he mentioned retirees, I assume he is retired and just looking for personal enrichment, but was shocked by what he found happening in acedemia.

Sad story, but true...
I tried to volunteer my wife's fluency in Spanish to the Shelby County School System. You know, I just thought that the growth of Hispanics in the county just might be causing a language problem among teachers, students and PARENTS. You know, tutoring for free, translating at Parent/Teacher meetings, even teaching English to Parents or students.
No Dice. Just flat out not interested. Go away and don't bother me.
Tried again with the Alabam State Department of Education. Go away.

No, I did not keep trying with the Spanish thing. Nobody was interested but me, obviously.
We are now trying to help in some small way thru the local churches. Just hacks me off that resources are available to the school system, and we just got blown off.
Oh, just prior to this episode, we tried to volunteer SERVICES to many of the Charitable Organizations that send fliers to your mailbox almost daily. Nope. Nope. Nope. Just enclose a check, minimum of $25, and we'll all be happy.

Funny that you should mention this. I have a child in the 11th grade. He has had one or two teachers preaching politics in a non-related subject. Almost all have been opposite of his father and my views. This is where it is critical to have open conversations of all topics with your children. You can educate them and give them a clear view and truths.

Too many people are concerned with what kids are taught instead of what they learn. Kids can be told a lot of things; whether or not they accept them as absolute truth is up to them, and if they do just believe everything they are told, then they haven't been taught well at home.
Teaching isn't just a job for teachers, it begins at home, and in the long run the teaching the parents do will have more to do with what kids learn than the teaching that teachers do. The concepts teachers present are important, but without a good set of principles taught by the parents it really doesn't matter.

Now you know why the parents that can are voting with their feet. There is an explosion of private schools going on in the larger cities.
In my humble opinion the biggest agenda that is in the government schools is the Humanism religion. It does more longer term damage to your kids. You should familiarize yourself with it.
We all let these social and politcal agendas slip into the books and curricula. We have to try to get it out or take 'em to private schools.
If you really want to see the original framework in the government schools take a look at the New England Primer. It will blow you away.

Many teachers give assignments without realizing that it will not be useful for most of the future students. For example, I'm an engineer, and I don't need to be able to write an essay.
