I have an old Johnson 6 horsepower that I use on my John Boat. Until recently it ran so smooth a person could not even hear it idle but while I was returning from a lenghty trip up Choccolocco Creek the motor developed a (for lack of a better description) severe miss. I thought it was just a spark plug (it has 2 ) but after replacing both the engine still runs VERY rough. I also replaced the fuel.

Any thoughts??

Ken

Do you know if you are getting spark to both plugs? If not you may have a bad ignitor/coil. Advance sells an Ignition tester you put between the plug and plug wire. Some people check the spark by laying a spark plug on the engine grounding it out. This allows you to see the spark. However this can be dangerous if there are any gas fumes around.

This old J has a fuel filter and a carb.? I would check them both before I even checked for spark. You might have picked up a little dirt in one of your jet valves.

McK

You were right it was the ignition coil It ran fine at low speeds but spit and sputtered under power.
Thanks to both of you for the help

Ken
