I have a 2003 5.0 volvo GL (carburated) that does not get fuel. It will run fine all day long I dock it come back next day and it runs for a minute then dies. ( long enough to burn the fuel in the bowl) This has happened 4 times in the last month. I posted 7-17 thinking it was vapor lock. To get it going again I have to remove the fuel line on top of the pump (which is pointing up) turn the engine over till the gas comes out then put line on and it runs fine for a day or so. I have replaced filters and pump, I tested the old pump and it seemed weak. Sometimes I have to prime the pump with gas to get it pumping again. Thanks

You may have a bad anti-siphon valve where the fuel line connects to the gas tank

is an anti-siphon valve like a check valve?? If so that would stop the gas from draining back down into the tank.....

Could be many problems. Probably venting between the pump and the tank. Probably not on the anit-siphon valve. That valve serves two purposes. One, to keep fuel upstream to the pump. And, just in case you sink the boat it helps keep gas in the tank and not the lake. I'll be glad to help you, but you will need to bring it to Prattville.

Clearwater is right. I have had the same problem on my Yamaha and nobody could find the problem for years. To check it for sure you can cut the fuel hose between the tank and motor install a brass Tee with a ball cock valve on one outlet in the Tee. whenever the engine dies open the valve for just a second or two close the valve and restart the engine. I will bet you it will start and run fine for a while.

Ken

After you confirm your problem, it's a good place to install a fuel filter and do away with the ball cock,

I would check for a crack in the pickup tube inside the fuel tank. Doe's it run ok with a full tank then problem start at half tank or less?

Thanks for all your advice guys. The boat runs fine at all fuel tank levels. The problem is when I turn it off, the gas sometimes drains back down the fuel line and leaves it dry. Then it runs ontil the bowl in Carb is empty and stalls. I have to prime the pump with gas to get it going again. Also, Should the pump come on when the key is 3/4 turned? I know when I crank the engine the pump is on but it does not pump at 3/4 turn which is where it is at when I release after it starts. Any thoughts ? Thanks

it depends on the motor setup, some pumps are activated by an oil pressure switch. It has to spin over and see oil pressure to pump. It still sounds like the anti siphon valve if the fuel is siphoning back to the tank

you could have a small hole or split in your fuel line( suction side)

or could be fitting on fuel pump is not sealing good...either could result in

fuel leaking back and not wanting to prime itself again...I had that problem

several years ago....pulled my hair out before I figured it out...

anyway...just another idea that might be worth checking out.
