Figured I better post the TRUE Story before stipernut posts his side of the story.

Let just say the following:
- Stripernut is a great guy and was a pleasure to meet and hangout with for the day.
- Stripernut has a great boat and it is definitely rigged for striper fising.
- Stripernut can sure find those stripers, all over them all day long.
- Striper nut is great teacher and we appreciated him taking the time to teach us all the finer points of striper fishing in terms of rods, reels, lines, sinkers, hooks, bait, reading the fish finder, etc etc.
- Stripernut is just that a stripernut.

Now for the remainder of the story:
There is an old saying you can lead a horse to water but cannot make him drink.
Well in our case you can put us over stripers all day long, but cannot make them take the bait.

Had over I would have to say 20+ hard hits and probably 40+ easy hits.

So guess the stripers were just not hungy, LOL. My story is and I am sticking with it there was a full moon the night before and there is an old wise tale that never fish a couple of days before and after a full moon. So I am blaming the lack of fish in the boat on the previous nights full moon.

But I will say the one striper we did boat made my day as BRF (BoatsRFun) landed his first striper and have you ever seen a 40 year old man have the feeling of being a 12 year old once again. BRF was like a kid in the candy store all smiles from ear to ear and I can gurantee you he is now hooked on striper fishing.

Stripernut, see you again this coming Saturday, looking forward to Phase 2 of our striper fishing lessons and we are going to boat the limit by lunch and head home early, it is guaranteed !!!!

Also to BRF and McKayGMC enjoyed the day on the lake with you guys and looking forward to next Saturday. As we all said a decent day on the lake is better than a good day in the city and we all had a great time. Thanks again stripernut.

End of story.

I'm thinking about a new weapon for the short striking stripes, similar to a Calcutta rig for Kings. That'll put a stop to short strikes, I think. We'll see and let you know after this weekend.

Was thinking the same thing.

As I figured the strong hits we were getting were the stripers taking the bait and then spitting it back out so a Calcutta rig might make sense.

Are you going to use a barb or treble hook in the back?

I bought some red #6 trebles yesterday to rig them. I'll tie us a few tonight for Saturday. I got my grades turned in and the semester rolled up, so I'm planning on scouting tomorrow afternoon. I'll tie a couple to a stump for Mike.

Just make sure you do not get the line in the trolling motor and also ensure you reel up the market buoy clockwise and not counter clockwise. LOL. Oh, I am in trouble now. May have to ensure I bring my life vest as there may be a mutiny on your boat this weekend.

What do you mean tie up a couple for Mike, heck what about me - LOL.

I was thinking of grabbing my buck tail striper jigs and try some jigging as well, if they are still playing games with the live bait, OK?? If so I will bring plenty for all. As have had for 2 years and never had a chance to try them out, but they sure are pretty.

See you Saturday.

Maverick,
I'll bring an extra rod so you can get jiggy with it. Talked to a buddy who fished today, and they had problems with stripes spitting out big shiners. I just finished tying some stinger rigs, and we'll see if that solves the problem. And, hey, we'll have a buoy and trolling motor seminar before we leave the dock - shouldn't take more than an hour.

See you guys Saturday and we are going to be back with the creel limit (not empty beer cans BRF) in the boat by noon !!!!!

It should be observed that using treble hooks as stinger rigs for schoolie stripers usually leads to more throat hooked fish and causes more mortality than it is worth. There are several factors that cause fish to short strike. From my teachings by Jim Parramore and Cecil Williams while you may encounter a group of passive fish that short strike, that may not be the norm and the best advice is to try to find another group of fish in a more aggressive state. A lot of the short striking in this instance can be associated with the use of black salties for bait. As a former striper guide I have experimented with the salties and bottom line there is no substitute for live gizzard shad for consistent success on these stripers! I'm not saying the salties will not catch fish but I am saying that they will not catch fish like shad day in and day out. If shad makes up over ninety percent of a striper's natural diet why fish with anything else? Short striking has a lot to do with the barometric pressure as well as the other factors that coincide with it like weather conditions, weather patterns, moon phase, etc.. When conditions get tough, you are far better to search out fish that are staging closer to the bottom and understand that while mother nature has put unfavorable conditions upon you these type of staging fish will most likely stay in place longer than fish moving up in the column and are more likely to give you a quality bite rather than a passive look. I hope this post help solve some of the confusion about short striking and shows that the use of treble hooks and stinger rigs should be avoided. Circle hooks give exceptional hook up ratios and very rarely make the fish unsuitable for a safe return to the water unlike the trebles. It is up to us to preserve our own fishery!

Lee,
I agree with most everything you wrote, and believe that:

1) Jim Parramore is the best striper guide on LM, and probably the best in AL. I too have learned a lot from him, and speak with him frequently.

2) Shad are the best bait, but are difficult to get, and even more difficult to keep alive - tanks, pumps, water purification chemicals, etc. are required to keep them on hand. When I started striper fishing on LM 15 years ago, it was fairly easy to cast net enough shad in Elkahattchie Creek for a day's fishing. Loads of shad in Elkahattchie Creek were related to phosphorus pollution that promoted algae growth. That pollution has been minimized and shad are no longer concentrated there in numbers they once were. To keep a good supply of shad on hand, one needs head to the Coosa and net them like Jim Parramore does, which is not feasible for a part-time guide living on LM (Jim Parramore lives in Birmingham, which makes it much easier for him to obtain shad from the Coosa) or a weekend striper fisherman. Moreover, I have had good success with black salties, and they are easy to keep in a cage on the dock. Black salties are also being used across the country for stripers with great success. Until an on-the water bait shop that carries shad opens up on LM I'll continue to use black salties. Another reason for me using black salties is that many of my clients want to learn to striper fish on their own, and they too will not have readily available shad - they need to learn to use what is easily available to them. Let me reiterate that LM is in dire need of an on-the-water bait shop on the north end of the lake that carries gizzard shad. I'm sure they could sell all they wanted at a $1 apiece. I wish someone would buy Bay Pines Marina and do just that.

3) Stinger hooks will kill more fish that are brought to the boat. Most of the people I take fishing want to keep their legal limit of fish. With that in mind, I only intend to use stinger hooks when the fish are short-striking (I have found a quick snap for easy on/off connection to the 2/0 circles I use) when a client wants to keep fish. When the legal limit is in the fish box, stingers will be removed. Moreover, no stingers will be used on a catch-and-release trip. I too am interested in maintaining our striper resource, and will avoid killing any fish not intended for the table.

Thanks again for your remarks, and I look forward to meeting you sometime soon.
Best,
Wes
