I'm new to the forum and to Lake Martin. I was wondering with the current water level, what ramps would be good to use for a twenty foot boat and a dual axle trailer. I'd like to put in on the upper east side of the lake if possible.

Mike - Exactly what part of the lake as there are numerous boat ramps around that lake that can handle your needs on the upper east side.

I'd like to find a ramp that is close to where the lake transitions into the river.

Being new to Martin, I'm not familiar with what ramps go out of service when the water is down. For that matter, I'm not really familiar with what the normal water level is. There have been several lakes in Georgia that had all of the ramps closed (Carters last year and Hartwell this year) because of the drought. I appreciate you guys taking the time to respond.

There are several in Alex City, River North Marine and Alex City boat ramp.. But be careful if you are new to the lake.. Can get into trouble in a heartbeat if you hed up river.. shallow, rocks and flats..

Fortunately, several ramps were extended during the drought here two summers ago, so access will not be a problem. Also, the warning about winter pool hazards applies all over the lake, not just upriver. My stock advice is to stick to big water and don't hug the shoreline until you become more familiar with the lake.

Agree with Alahsuker regarding heading up River, BE CAREFUL.

The closest ramp to the Upper end of the River is the Alex City Boat Ramp.

Mike, Alex City boat ramp is definitely your best bet if you're trying to get up river... but as mentioned, be real careful. As soon as you pull out into the river, it can get real shallow on your left. You'll have to find the channel this time of year and stick with it. It's a long ride up to the shoals and even longer if you're not familiar with the water. I remember once heading up and coming around the bend at Hillabee Creek thinking I had plenty of water... I looked over and saw a blue heron standing in what looked like the middle of the river with only about 2" of his legs below the surface! Safe travels... upriver is likely a great place for stripes and white bass this time of year. Good luck!
