Are you going to a larger or heavier engine? If so, I would suggest making sure your transom is strong enough. It should not be modified with a steel plate, etc. to make it strong enough.

I am going to a larger engine and it seems that it is strong enough, i was wanting some helpful tips to make it easier.

Will the new engine mount in the same holes in the transom as the old one or do you have a jackplate to mount it on? What are the engines, old and new?
